It is very dry currently. Everyone is jumpy when they see a fire...even if it just a trash fire. PLEASE, notify Boone County Dispatch (515-433-0527) if you are going to be burning. We often get called out to controlled burns that are not first reported to dispatch, as passers by call them in. It ends up being a waste of our time and YOUR money. Thank you.

Boone County Alert:

WINTER STORM WATCH IN EFFECT FROM LATE TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH LATE WEDNESDAY NIGHT
..BLIZZARD CONDITIONS POSSIBLE WEDNESDAY....The combination of moderate to heavy snow and strong, gusty winds may produce blizzard conditions Wednesday.
Winds may gust to 50 mph or more. Travel may be difficult to impossible at times.

* WHAT...Blizzard conditions possible. Total snow accumulations between 2 and 8 inches possible across the watch area. The higher end of that range over west central and northern Iowa. Winds could gust as high as 55 mph.

* WHERE...Portions of central, north central, northeast, northwest, southwest, and west central Iowa.

* WHEN...From late Tuesday night through late Wednesday night.

* IMPACTS...The strong winds and weight of snow on tree limbs may down power lines and could cause sporadic power outages. Whiteout conditions are possible and may make travel treacherous and potentially life-threatening. Travel could be very difficult.
Widespread blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the Wednesday morning commute northwest and evening commute there and farther south and east.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...With wind gusts of 50 mph or more possible, tree damage and power outages may occur even outside of locations that receive significant snowfall.
Prepare for possible blizzard conditions. Continue to monitor the latest forecasts for updates on this situation.

Persons should delay all travel if possible. If travel is absolutely necessary, drive with extreme caution and be prepared for sudden
changes in visibility. Leave plenty of room between you and the motorist ahead of you, and allow extra time to reach your destination. Avoid sudden braking or acceleration, and be especially cautious on hills or when making turns. Make sure your car is winterized and in good working order.

Updated snowfall map for Thursday as of New Years Morning!

A fast moving clipper system is set to affect Iowa on Thursday with light snow. The snow is forecast to start prior to sunrise in western Iowa and overspread much of central Iowa during the morning. The snow persist through midday with the precipitation ending from west to east during the afternoon. Snow amounts are likely to range from 1 to 3 inches, mainly along and south of the Highway 20 corridor. Continue to monitor the forecast heading into Thursday and plan to give yourself extra travel time.

12/30/2024

Tonight's snowfall forecast is a tricky one as temperatures wobble around critical thresholds through the night. What can be said with certainty is primarily western and southern Iowa will see snow accumulations. Right now, those amounts look to be generally around an inch. However, higher amounts cannot be ruled out since temperatures could be cooler than currently forecasted. Regardless of snowfall amounts, prepare for extra travel time Tuesday morning.
