Got to tour the farm yesterday, and I gotta say they have the most beautiful, healthy, clean farm I’ve seen (and I’ve seen a lot). They’re really doing things right and respecting the Plant. I’m impressed by their transparency and generosity. Def give them a follow, as well as who they work closely with to keep their soil optimized. Great job guys!

Posted • Several growers have asked me about the practice of creating artificial soil horizons when using soilless media in pots or beds. I’m not strongly opinionated about it, but here are two thoughts:

1. I’ve always read that soil interfaces created perched water tables. Putting aggregate or wood at the bottom of a pot won’t improve drainage, even though that may be counterintuitive. To test this, you could place a tensiometer in the top few inches of media, one mid-way down, and one right above the layer of drainage material and simply observe.

2. If you’re growing in a soilless media in pots, you’re so far removed from a natural soil system, why try to replicate one? If the answer is “biology”, you can creating thriving biological abundance and diversity that achieve production goals without soil horizons.

Definitely still growing the herbs and grinding and all that…but growing this little human is my everything. Parenting brings us so far beyond ourselves, knowing we nurture future generations that will inherit all we create (both good and bad).
