“World Design Day (WDD) is an opportunity to recognize the value of design and its capacity for change in the world -- and to celebrate the birthday of ico-D (International Council of Design)!

The goal of WDD is to challenge designers to reflect deeply on the well-being of people within their local environments, and to find innovative solutions to local needs by using design as a vehicle to honor diversity, transcend borders, and improve quality of life. Marking the anniversary of ico-D’s establishment on 27 April 1963, participants worldwide are invited to gather, innovate, and live out a moment of design by organizing public events and initiatives on 27 April of each year.

Font styles and letter forms play an integral role in design. With every distinctive nuance, they communicate mood and spirit and provide designers with countless creative possibilities. Often the use of a singular character or symbol can interject the “WOW” factor as the centerpiece of a presentation. One of my favorites is the fascinating ampersand. This bendy little glyph has such a variety of creative interpretations…no wonder my affection for it is so widely shared. Did you know that the ampersand is now acknowledged with its very own national calendar holiday? Established in 2015, September 8th is the day that the ampersand is celebrated by its adoring fans. Loving Vincent Indeed.
If you didn’t have the privilege of seeing this year’s breakthrough film “Loving Vincent” in the theater, it has recently been released on DVD and is in my opinion a “must have” for any art enthusiast’s movie collection. Nominated for the 2018 Academy Award for “Best Animated Feature,” it gets my vote for the coveted Oscar. It is a masterful artistic feat as the first fully painted animated feature film ever produced. This visual wonder is both captivating and mesmerizing in its storytelling while paying tribute to Vincent van Gogh’s signature style. Pop some popcorn ‘cause this one has plenty of eye candy. Thumb’s UP!!

PANTONE Color Institute announced it’s 2018 Color of the Year to be Ultra Violet 18-3838. The color purple and its interpretive meanings are fairly broad. It’s been used to represent royalty, bravery, peace, tranquility, imagination, creativity, outer space and the future. Countless species In the natural world showcase it’s many tonal attributes. Some of purple’s common cultural associations are the Purple Heart military medal of honor; the branding color of the LA Lakers basketball team; the favorite color of pop music icon, Prince and his album titled “Purple Rain”; and of course, it’s the favorite color reference used for the merchandising of wine, soda, gum and anything flavored “grape.” And have you seen the 2018 Olympic Skating Competition arena? Enough said. I expect we’ll see a lot more purple as a trend in fashion, home, and design applications alike. I was recently introduced to the documentary series “Abstract” on Netflix and WOW, what a treat. If you are a fellow creative or just have a passion and appreciation for design, I highly recommend it. The production of the documentary itself is well done in its perspective and storytelling style. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
