On June 19, 1865, Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston and announced General Order No. 3, informing enslaved people in Texas that they were free.

The announcement came more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. The proclamation declared freedom for enslaved people in Confederate-held territory and marked a significant step toward the abolition of slavery in the United States.

Juneteenth serves as a reminder of this important chapter in our nation's history and the enduring significance of freedom under the Constitution.
