In this photo I am using a Tomograph. The device uses sonic technology to analyze the interior of a tree. Soundings are taken around the tree and a computer analyzes the density of the wood and renders an image of the trunk displaying sound wood, decay and cavities.
The map represents the cross section of the trunk and the brown present is solid wood, the green and purple is decay, and the blue is cavity.
This tool is very effective in assessing the risk of tree without being invasive.
