Every story happens somewhere. Sometimes the setting becomes part of the story itself.

Asbury Park is woven throughout The Soul In Exile Trilogy, but the connection didn't begin with its famous music scene. It began with a personal history stretching back to childhood.

Over time, those early memories were joined by music, songwriting, disappearing landmarks, years of decline, and finally a city finding its way back.

That accumulation of history is what made Asbury Park more than scenery. The city became part of the language of Soul In Exile—a place where memory, loss, survival, and renewal could all occupy the same landscape.

I am not there yet (my book is still in its first-draft phase) but if this remains the case, I will seek publishing elsewhere.

The sad irony is that Simon & Schuster is a Jewish-founded publisher.

Simon & Schuster can publish whomever it likes, including Susan Abulhawa. But if it stands by her antisemitic views, I will sadly look for another publisher. I hope that others will do the same.

This is the double standard that Jewish writers—the "People of the Book"—have to contend with in today's America.

I am getting ready to complete the first draft of my first book, to be followed by feedback from several trusted readers and a second draft based on their comments. After that, I will begin submitting my manuscript to publishers and/or agents. I can't pretend I'm looking forward to navigating an environment in which one Jewish author sees her event canceled because of who she is, while another author is rewarded with a publishing contract despite repeatedly dehumanizing Jews.

But run that gauntlet I will. And so help me G-d, my book *will* get published.

Every creative project has a story behind it.

The Soul In Exile Trilogy grew from a collection of songs into a much larger journey—one that spans three albums, decades of songwriting, and places that have shaped my life along the Jersey Shore and beyond.

In the months ahead, I'll occasionally share some of the stories, inspirations, and creative process behind the music.

If you'd like to start at the beginning, you can explore the trilogy here:

From our editor:

"I am an American Jew and a Jewish American, proud of both and ashamed of neither.

I am also a dual American-Israeli citizen. Some may want to criminalize this, but there is no law against it in either country (unless, perhaps, I run for office).

I won't accept any absolutism (insisting I choose just one) from any American bigot, or Jewish/Israeli zealot.

Anybody who has a problem with this can take a long walk off a short pier."

This is what I face as I prepare to complete and seek publishing for my long-delayed novel.

This is what I face as I prepare to complete and seek publishing for my long-delayed novel.

One solution, writes an author and activist, is to envision publishing as an act of peoplehood

This year, America's 250th Independence Day coincided with Shabbat. Even though the fireworks have faded, that convergence is still worth reflecting on.

For nearly two and a half centuries, the United States has been an extraordinary blessing to the Jewish people. Its promise of religious liberty allowed Jews not merely to survive, but to flourish openly while helping to build a nation founded on liberty, freedom of conscience, and equal justice under the law.

Those ideals feel increasingly fragile today. Rising antisemitism, hostility toward Zionism, and political movements that seek to redefine the American experiment have caused many to wonder whether this country can remain what it has long been for the Jewish community.

Some believe the answer is simply to leave. For many Jews, aliyah is a beautiful calling, and the State of Israel will always remain the eternal homeland of the Jewish people. But gratitude also carries responsibility. A nation that has offered so much to the Jewish people is worth defending—not abandoning at the first sign of trouble.

Loving Israel does not require giving up on America. The freedoms secured in 1776 are still worth preserving, and every generation is called upon to defend them for those who will inherit them.

As America begins its next quarter-millennium, may we remember that freedom is never self-sustaining. It is a gift to be cherished, a responsibility to be defended, and, when necessary ... a hill worth dying on. 🇺🇸🇮🇱

... and the king and Haman sat down to drink; but the city of Shushan was perplexed.

וְהַמֶּלֶךְ וְהָמָן יָשְׁבוּ לִשְׁתּוֹת, וְהָעִיר שׁוּשָׁן נָבוֹכָה.
