With the colder weather, OCW has closed for the 2026 season. To celebrate, we wanted to present a recap of our season. We officially started trapping at the start of May and ended our season at the end of September.
May 18th was our first trap that we set for the season. This trap we placed in Leicester center, since we had high numbers there in years prior. Although we started trapping in May, we had not reached threshold until June 11th.
In total, we trapped 217 times this season! At the beginning of the season and the end of the season, we trapped less routes to account for our cooler, dryer weather. Once the weather warmed up, we ramped up our trapping and were trapping all 17 routes every week.
Our constant trapping made it so that we sprayed 114 times this season! The most we sprayed in a week was 17 times!
During the season, we also did larval dips. We dipped in total 22 times during the season. With our dips, we were unable to spread larvacide due to our low larval counts.
Although we did not see a lot of larva when we dipped, we did see a lot of larva as we did resistance testing. Every year, we have to test our mosquitoes to make sure that they are not gaining resistance to the products that we are using, so we must find egg rafts and raise some mosquitoes. After we raise the mosquitoes to larva, we are able to send them to Cornell so that they can test them.
Overall, we have accomplished a lot this season and we hope that you have enjoyed your summer with us. We hope that y'all will join us again next year. And with that - OCW is going into hibernation and is officially closed.
