Every rule exists because something happened.

The same can often be said about people.

When someone seems resistant, closed off, or difficult to work with, it doesn't automatically make them toxic. Their behavior may be rooted in experiences you can't see.

Strong leaders resist the urge to judge quickly and choose curiosity instead. Understanding the story behind the behavior can change everything.

Ever wonder why younger employees often push for change while more experienced team members urge caution?

It may come down to the difference between fluid intelligence and crystallized intelligence.

Early in life, we're typically more innovative, adaptable, and willing to take risks. As we gain experience, we build wisdom, pattern recognition, and a stronger awareness of potential pitfalls.

Neither approach is better. Great organizations learn how to leverage both.

When innovation and experience work together, better decisions follow.

Conversation is not the same as connection.

That’s one of the ideas behind this week’s blog, Better Relationships Require Better Questions.

Last week, I wrote about the importance of relationships and how much of leadership, business, and life comes back to the people around us.

This week, I wanted to take that idea one step further.

If relationships matter, then we should probably be more intentional about how we build them. And one of the simplest places to start is by asking better questions.

Good questions challenge assumptions.

They communicate care.
They help people feel seen.

And for leaders, that matters because leadership is not primarily about the leader. It’s about the people being led.

Are you asking the kinds of questions that help people feel seen?

Competency matters.
Warmth matters too.

Leadership isn’t just about being capable — and it’s not just about being likable. The leaders people trust most are the ones who combine credibility with genuine connection.

If you lead with warmth but no competency, trust eventually fades. But if you lead with competency and no warmth, people may respect you without ever truly connecting with you.

The most effective leaders learn to balance both.

Self-awareness may be one of the most overlooked leadership skills — and one of the most important.

The good news? It can be learned.

Strong relationships and effective leadership both begin with asking an honest question:
“How am I showing up?”

Growth starts when we become aware of the impact we have on the people around us.

Healthy relationships require balance.

Leadership, partnership, and trust aren’t built when one person is constantly giving while the other only receives. Over time, imbalance creates frustration, resentment, and disconnection.

Strong relationships make space for both people to be seen, heard, and valued.

One of the quickest ways to damage a relationship is assuming someone else’s motives.

Most people aren’t intentionally trying to dominate a conversation, overlook you, or make things one-sided — but when we start assigning intent without understanding, trust breaks down fast.

Strong leadership requires curiosity before conclusion.

Today, we honor the courage, sacrifice, and legacy of the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

Their example reminds us that true leadership is rooted in selflessness, courage, and commitment to something greater than ourselves.

People are drawn to warmth.

They trust competency.

The leaders who make the biggest impact bring both.

Because relationships may open the door — but credibility is what keeps you in the room.
