🎉 WE HIT 400 FOLLOWERS! 🎉

And follower #400 just happens to be someone I have a lot of respect for — Garret Hinton with Sage Construction LLC! 👊🔨

Garrett works in the same line of work I do, and he’s one of those guys whose work speaks for itself. He’s detailed, takes pride in what he does, and believes in doing things the right way — the same kind of work ethic I try to bring to every job. Definitely take some time to check out his page and work.

In this industry, it’s easy to look at other contractors as competition. I don’t see it that way. There’s plenty of room for good craftsmen who care about their clients and take pride in their work. When I see another contractor doing quality work, I’ll give credit where credit is due.

So it’s pretty cool that Garrett and Sage Construction happened to be #400. Much respect, brother! 🤝

And THANK YOU to every single person who has followed, shared, commented, recommended us, or trusted us with their home. For a small local business, 400 people choosing to follow our work means a lot.

Now Garrett… being #400 comes with a very prestigious prize:

Absolutely nothing. 😂😂 Just bragging rights and a Facebook shoutout! Well, I also would say “FSWHO, WE THE U!!” 😂

On to 500! 🔥

🔥 FROM A MESS… TO DONE RIGHT. 🔥

Remember this bathroom? 👀

This was the shower that had recently been remodeled—but unfortunately, pretty tile was hiding some serious problems underneath.

Once we started demolition, we found exactly what we were afraid of:

❌ Improper waterproofing
❌ Exposed seams and corners
❌ A completely saturated mud bed
❌ No proper pre-slope
❌ Standing water above the liner
❌ An improperly installed shower pan liner
❌ A wood curb that was exposed and soaking wet
❌ Plumbing that needed to be corrected

At that point, there was only one way I was willing to handle it:

Take it all the way down and rebuild it correctly.

And now… LOOK AT IT. 👏

New plumbing. Proper drainage. Proper waterproofing. Proper shower floor pitch. Clean tile work. New pebble floor. New curb. And most importantly—a shower that’s built correctly behind the tile where you can’t see it.

That last part matters.

Because a beautiful shower isn’t just about what you see when the job is finished. The real craftsmanship is in everything you’ll hopefully never see again.

This homeowner already paid once to have this bathroom remodeled. They shouldn’t have had to pay twice.

That’s why I preach it constantly:

Hire the right professional for the right trade. Tile is the finish. The system underneath it is what makes the shower last.

Another one rescued. 💪🔨
Thank you to the Client for trusting in us, especially after what they have been through.

🚿 SHOWER REBUILD UPDATE — THIS is why what’s behind the tile matters! 🔨

We’re making some serious progress on the shower we recently tore apart, and before we cover everything back up, I wanted to show you what doing it right looks like.

If you’ve been following this project, you probably remember what we uncovered during demolition — SharkBite fittings hidden inside the walls that had actually been GLUED. 😳 Yep… glued.

Well, that’s gone. 👋

✅ The plumbing has now been completely redone.
No glued SharkBites. No questionable shortcuts. The shower valves and supply lines have been properly installed and secured so we can confidently close these walls back up.

And then there was the drain… 🤦‍♂️

During demolition, we discovered that the original shower drain DIDN’T EVEN HAVE A P-TRAP. A shower drain needs a properly installed trap to prevent sewer gases from entering the home. That has now been corrected with a proper P-trap and drain connection.
Thank you Customized Plumbing Solutions for coming in and making the changes the correct and professional way.

But we weren’t finished there…

The shower floor also needed attention. Instead of trying to build over an improper surface and hoping for the best, we corrected the foundation first.

✅ Plumbing corrected
✅ Glued SharkBites eliminated
✅ Proper P-trap installed
✅ Drain corrected
✅ Shower floor leveled
✅ Floor now ready for the shower pan

This is the part of a shower remodel that most homeowners will never see once the tile goes up — but in my opinion, it’s some of the most important work on the entire project.

Beautiful tile means absolutely nothing if what’s underneath it isn’t done correctly.

We’re officially past the ugly stuff and getting closer to putting this shower back together the way it should have been done the first time. 💪

Next up… SHOWER PAN & WATERPROOFING. 👀🔥

Stay tuned. This transformation is just getting started.

🚨 THE MORE WE OPEN UP THIS SHOWER, THE MORE WE FIND… 🚨

Yesterday we showed you what was hiding underneath the tile and waterproofing.

Today, we opened the walls.

And now we’re talking plumbing. 😳🔧

Take a close look at these pictures. You’re looking at multiple push-to-connect/SharkBite-style fittings incorporated into the plumbing behind this shower — and several connections appear to have glue, adhesive or sealant smeared around them.

And here’s the kicker:

💧 WE HAVE ALREADY DETECTED A LEAK.

So let’s talk about SharkBite fittings for a minute, because there’s a misconception worth clearing up.

WHAT ARE SHARKBITE FITTINGS ACTUALLY MADE FOR?

SharkBite fittings were designed to make plumbing connections quickly and without traditional soldering, crimping or gluing.

They’re especially convenient for repairs, renovations, tight spaces and situations where connecting different approved types of pipe would otherwise be difficult.

You cut and properly prepare the pipe, insert it to the required depth, and the fitting’s internal components mechanically grip the pipe while an O-ring creates the watertight seal.

That’s the whole point.

YOU DON’T GLUE A SHARKBITE CONNECTION.

Putting glue, silicone or some other sealant around the outside of a leaking or questionable push-to-connect fitting isn’t what makes that fitting watertight.

If the pipe isn’t cut square…

If it isn’t properly deburred and prepared…

If it isn’t inserted to the proper depth…

If the O-ring gets damaged…

Or if the fitting isn’t installed according to the manufacturer’s requirements…

Smearing something around the outside isn’t the answer.

Now, here’s another important clarification:

SharkBite fittings are not automatically “temporary-only” fittings. Certain push-to-connect fittings are approved by their manufacturer and applicable plumbing codes for permanent installations, including some concealed applications when installed correctly.

But here’s where workmanship and professional judgment come into play.

When I’m building a shower that’s potentially going to be covered with waterproofing, backer, mortar and thousands of dollars worth of tile…

I DON’T WANT A WALL FULL OF UNNECESSARY CONNECTIONS AND POTENTIAL FAILURE POINTS.

Every fitting is another connection.

Every connection is another place something could eventually fail.

And if that connection is buried behind a finished tile shower, getting back to it isn’t exactly as simple as opening the cabinet under the sink.

That’s why the plumbing BEHIND a beautiful shower matters just as much as the tile you eventually see.

And in this particular shower, this isn’t hypothetical anymore.

We already found a leak. 💧

First we discovered improper waterproofing.

Then a saturated mud bed.

Then standing water above the liner.

Then no proper pre-slope.

Then an improperly installed pan liner.

Then wet wood at the curb.

And now we’re opening the walls and finding questionable plumbing connections with an active leak already detected.

This is exactly why I keep saying:

A SHOWER IS A SYSTEM — NOT JUST TILE.

The prettiest tile installation in the world means absolutely nothing if the waterproofing, drainage and plumbing behind it aren’t done correctly.

Most homeowners will never see this part of their shower.

But this is the part that determines whether that beautiful shower lasts.

We’re still in demo mode…

And apparently this shower still has more secrets to tell us. 🤦‍♂️😂

Stay tuned. We’re tearing out the shortcuts and rebuilding this one the way it should have been done the first time. 🔨🚿

🚨 DEMO UPDATE: And unfortunately… it’s worse than it looked. 🚨

We’re still in demo mode on this shower redo, and now that we’re peeling back the layers, we’re finding exactly why a shower can look finished on the outside and still be failing underneath.

Here’s what we’ve uncovered so far:

💧 Insufficient waterproofing throughout the shower.

❌ Seams were not properly taped and waterproofed.

❌ Several corners had roughly an inch of exposed area, leaving them vulnerable to water intrusion.

💦 The mud bed was SOAKING wet. Not damp. Not a little moisture. When we broke it apart, portions looked and felt almost like the mud had never fully dried.

🌊 We found actual pools of standing water ABOVE the pan liner.

❌ No proper pre-slope underneath the liner. Without a pre-slope directing water toward the drain, moisture that makes its way through the mud bed has nowhere to go—so it sits there.

❌ The pan liner itself was not installed correctly.

❌ The liner did not properly carry over and protect the curb.

And here’s one of the biggest problems…

🪵 The curb was constructed with wood, and because it wasn’t properly protected by the waterproofing system, that wood was exposed to moisture and is now soaking wet.

Take a good look at these pictures. 👀

THIS is why waterproofing matters.

Tile and grout are the pretty part of a shower. They are NOT the waterproofing system. The work you’ll never see once the shower is finished is some of the most important work we do.

This shower wasn’t failing because of one little mistake. We’re uncovering multiple failures in the system underneath the tile.

And remember—this was a recently remodeled shower.

That’s the painful part.

The homeowner already paid once to have it done. Now they’re paying again to have it torn completely apart and rebuilt correctly.

We’re not done with demo yet either… 😳

Stay tuned, because once everything is exposed, I’ll show you exactly what we found—and then we’re going to show you how a shower should be built from the ground up.

The prettiest tile in the world means absolutely nothing if what’s behind it isn’t done right.

🚿🔨 EVERY BANG IS THERAPY. EVERY TILE IS CLOSURE. 😂

Today we’re starting a shower redemption story.

Our client, recently had this shower remodeled…but unfortunately, it wasn’t done correctly. So instead of enjoying her brand-new shower, she’s already having to watch it get torn apart and rebuilt.

And when we say torn apart…we mean BACK TO SQUARE ONE. 🔨💥

The issues?

❌ Shower floor doesn’t have the proper pitch
❌ Water sits on the bench
❌ Water sits inside the niche
❌ Both showerheads are leaking
❌ Poor tile cuts and finish work
❌ Multiple areas that simply weren’t constructed the way a shower should be

Today, all of that starts disappearing.

Every tile coming off = closure. 😂
Every swing of the hammer = therapy. 🔨
Every piece hitting the dumpster = one step closer to doing it RIGHT.

Because a shower isn’t just about making tile look pretty.

What’s underneath matters.

The pitch matters.
The waterproofing matters.
The drainage matters.
The prep work matters.
And the details absolutely matter.

Unfortunately, our client is having to pay the price for someone else’s shortcuts. Our job now is to give her the shower she should have received the FIRST TIME.

Over the next several days, I’m going to take you behind the scenes and show you exactly what we find during demolition, how we correct it, and how we rebuild this shower from the ground up.

And something tells me…we might find a few surprises once these walls start coming down. 👀😬😂

DAY 1: DEMOLITION. 🔨

Shower redemption starts TODAY.

Stay tuned…because this before-and-after is going to be a good one. 😎🚿🔥

⚠️ Not every shower that looks beautiful is built to last.

This Monday we’ll be starting a project that, honestly, shouldn’t have to happen.

The shower was recently remodeled, but it now has to be completely torn out and rebuilt from scratch.

Why?

🚿 The shower floor doesn’t drain properly because it wasn’t pitched correctly.

💧 The bench holds standing water.

🧼 The niche holds standing water.

🚰 Both showerheads are leaking.

📐 The tile trim and finishing details weren’t installed correctly.

…and there are several other issues we’ll be addressing throughout the remodel.

The hardest part?

The homeowner already paid for this shower once.

This post isn’t about criticizing another contractor. It’s about educating homeowners.

Tile is the finish you see, but the real craftsmanship is hidden beneath it. Proper waterproofing, correct pitch on every horizontal surface, quality plumbing, precise layout, and attention to every detail are what determine whether a shower lasts for decades or becomes an expensive problem.

A shower isn’t just tile on a wall—it’s a complete waterproof system.

Before hiring someone for a specialty trade like tile, ask questions:

✔️ How will the shower be waterproofed?
✔️ How do you ensure the shower floor, bench, and niche drain properly?
✔️ Do you specialize in shower installations?
✔️ Can I see examples of your work?

Choosing the right contractor isn’t just about getting the best-looking shower—it’s about getting one that performs as beautifully as it looks.

Over the next couple of weeks, I’ll be documenting this project from demolition to completion so you can see exactly what goes into rebuilding a shower the right way.

Because when it’s built right the first time, you only pay for it once.
