BUG FACT FRIDAYS

Native to wooded areas and riverbanks across North America, the Hackberry Butterfly is easily recognized by its mottled grayish-brown wings dotted with black, white, and orange eyespots, but you won't find this restless flier hovering around your garden flowers. Instead of sipping floral nectar, this bold insect acts as a forest scavenger, preferring to feed on tree sap, rotting fruit, and muddy puddles to get its nutrients. If those unconventional meals aren't available, the Hackberry has a surprisingly friendly backup plan: it is famous for fearlessly landing on hikers and resting quietly on their skin to drink the essential salts directly from their sweat!

BUG FACT FRIDAYS!

Native to wooded areas and gardens across the Americas, the Orchard Orb-weaver is known for its metallic silver body striped with neon green and bright orange markings, but this flashy color palette isn't just for show. Instead, it acts as a clever form of camouflage when the spider hangs upside-down in its horizontal web, helping its shining underside blend perfectly into the dappled sunlight and foliage of the forest canopy. If a predator still isn't fooled, the orb-weaver has a backup plan: it rapidly drops from its web on a single silken dragline, escaping into the brush before climbing safely back up once the danger has passed.

Cockroaches don't just invade your space—they trigger serious indoor allergies! 🪳

Did you know 17% to 41% of people test positive for roach allergies? This wide range exists because where you live matters—people in dense neighborhoods or warm, humid climates face a much higher risk of exposure.

When proteins from their shed skin and droppings become airborne dust, it leads to:
🤧 Constant sneezing & itchy eyes
😮‍💨 Wheezing & coughing
🏥 Severe asthma flare-ups

BUG FACT FRIDAYS!

Native to the forests of southern India, the Domino Cockroach gets its name from its stark black shell covered in bright white spots, but this pattern isn't just for show. Instead, it is a clever form of defensive mimicry designed to make predators mistake them for the aggressive six-spotted ground beetle, an insect that sprays harsh chemical irritants when attacked. If a predator still isn't fooled, the roach has a backup plan: it secretes its own unique chemical compound that acts as an alarm pheromone to warn nearby roaches of impending danger.

BUG FACT FRIDAYS!

The Easter Egg Weevil gets its name from the brilliant, iridescent patterns on its shell that look exactly like hand-painted Easter eggs. Rather than using pigments, these insects create their colors using tiny, light-reflecting crystals in their scales. These bright patterns actually serve as a warning to predators that they are not an easy meal. In fact, their exoskeleton is so incredibly hard that entomologists often bend their steel pins trying to study them.

FACT FRIDAYS

Hiding beneath the broad leaves of summer crops, the Squash Bug (Anasa tristis) is a major threat to the vegetable garden. Considered one of the most damaging pests to pumpkins, melons, and zucchini, an unchecked infestation can quickly produce hundreds of nymphs on a single vine. Squash bugs operate efficiently, using needle-like mouthparts to pierce plant tissue and suck out the vital sap while injecting a toxic saliva. This toxin causes mature, healthy plants to wilt, turn black, and die in a matter of days. Their relentless feeding makes them highly destructive; they can ruin an entire harvest before most gardeners even notice the insects hiding at the base of the stems.
