For the first episode of Give IT to Me Straight, Logan sat down with Shane to talk about something a lot of people use without giving it much thought: personal VPNs.

A VPN can be helpful when you’re traveling, working remotely, or using public Wi-Fi. But when it is used for work without approval, it can create problems for the business.

From an IT perspective, company data being routed through an unmanaged third-party VPN raises questions. Is this normal employee activity? Is the connection secure? Why does the traffic suddenly look like it is coming from somewhere else?

That is why communication matters.

If you are using a VPN for work, especially while traveling, it is always best to check with your IT team first. They can help make sure you are protected without creating unnecessary alerts or putting company data at risk.
