Trevor Allard, co-owner and Vice President of Allard Lumber Company in Brattleboro, Vermont, says the timing and uncertainty around tariffs on lumber has made doing business at the 50-year-old lumber mill increasingly difficult.

Attention All Suppliers

At this time, due to uncertainties in the log and lumber markets caused by the new tariffs, we will no longer be accepting loads of 100% ash logs. Ash will be accepted in small quantities at a price of $500/Mbf for 2 and better logs. Mat, tie, and pallet log prices will remain the same. We will also not be taking on any new suppliers at this time. For more information please contact your local yard manager.

In honor of our 50th year in business, we will be periodically posting historical photos from Allard Lumber throughout the years. These photos are from 1974 the only lumber purchased for the first mill building were the locust posts for the ground and enough 6x6s and decking to build the floor. The mill (a 100-year-old hand set carriage with a wooden frame) was then set up on the foundation and they sawed out lumber to build the rest of the building.

Volatility in global markets and industry consolidation have forced the people who work the land to seek out new business models, and those workers say a 54-year-old land-use statute is stunting the innovation needed to keep the agriculture and wood products sectors alive.
