Don't have your curbside bin for compost yet? Pick one up in the Finance Office, Room 111, within the Municipal Center. Where does that thing belong? Windham Solid Waste’s A to Z tool on our website is an attempt to capture all of your burning trash questions. When the fire extinguisher is empty, the couch has been ripped up by Fido, or the neighbor’s baseball has broken through your window and hit the TV, where is the appropriate place to put those broken items?

At the very least you can make sure bird seed from winter and your trash areas are secured. If you are composting at home make sure to add twice as much carbon (dried leaves, straw, wood shavings, etc.) as food scraps to your compost system.

We apologize for the inconvenience, but due to an unexpected staff shortage, the WSWMD transfer station will be closed on Saturday, May 23rd. Because of the Memorial Day holiday on Monday, we will reopen Tuesday, May 26th.

The Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Depot is open for the season at WSWMD! The HHW Depot at WSWMD will be open every week on Tuesdays from 8:30-10:30 AM until mid-October. Make an appointment online or call today (802-257-0272) to save your spot in order to get rid of hazardous liquids and/or powders. This is your opportunity to receive your full-year access sticker early if you are new to WSWMD. They expire on June 30, 2027, and we begin selling them on May 1, 2026. The cost of stickers is $60.

If you currently have a red sticker, it is still valid until June 30, 2026, but you can renew it at any point between May 1 and June 30, 2026. For more detailed information, visit our website.

Happy Earth Day!

2 free home-composting workshops coming up at the WSWMD compost demonstration area (next to our COW Food Scrap Bin):

Wednesday May 6th 4pm - 6pm

Saturday May 9th 2pm - 4pm

Rain or shine, wear weather appropriate clothes, park at the office building, and bring your questions! All levels of experience with composting welcome - the more the merrier. Workshops may last for only 1 to 1 1/2 hours but we have the space for 2 hours just in case!

WSWMD outreach coordinator, Alex Lacy, will be joined by 1-2 VT Master Composters to help troubleshoot your specific compost challenges! We will cover the basics of home composting, various styles of home composting, and help you build your compost confidence!
