Who am I?

My name is Mic Finnie and I grew up right here on Hazelwood Pl. in Brea CA. I went to Mariposa elem. in 1966 for kindergarten in the 1st. year that they opened and was in the 1st. class that went K-6 there. I was a Cub Scout, I was a Boy Scout, I went to Brea Junior High and Brea Olinda High Schools. I then went on to the United States Air Force where I was an Air Traffic Controller in Germany. I

left the Air Force way too early because I was too young to know any better! I drove a truck for a while and made a stop in Ohio that ended up lasting for about 27 years ; /
I sold cars for 20+ years and owned and ran an auto detail shop for about 7 years. I learned that I liked working with my hands a lot more than anything else that I have done. I ended up with 2 amazing daughters and once they were grown and off to college, I decided It was time for me to pack up and move back home! I Love Brea, and I now live close enough that I can see the street that I grew up on from my apartment's balcony and I can watch the sunsets each night. Now to me that is paradise! In the last 4 Β½ years, I had the opportunity to spend updating a house that hadn’t had any maintenance performed on it in the last 30 years. Some of the improvements that I have made to this property to improve it’s value preparing it for sale include a new sink and faucet, or even a toilet. A freshening up of your living room, or the interior of your house or go outside and spice things up with something as simple as flower boxes around your yard, or maybe a new a modern style fence, a gate, you can call me and know that you are getting a local friend who can get the job done without taking you to the poor house!!! Oh BTW,
I also clean detail and polish cars! So if you want it done right! Call Mic Finnie!

This week, one of my jobs was to repair these blinds, they had been broken for quite awhile now. There are small staples that hold them in place, and are originally put in by a machine. The customer bought the staples which came like they should be put into a machine and I used my knife to pry each one off at a time and then pressed each and every one into place. It took quite a bit of time, and I'm not sure how long they'll last, but it's fixed for now and the customer's very happy! 😁

This week's job was to resurface a deck. I needed to purchase 60 2"x4"x12' Douglas Fir boards weighing about 30 - 35 lbs each stain them all on all sides, and then dismantle the old deck and cut the pieces in half so they were easier to transport, and put them into a pile. Then start on the new deck. I also needed to repair the stainless steel cables that ran from one end of the yard to the other, and surrounded the deck. Some of these cables had been down so long that they were actually buried in the dirt and had to be dug up.
This job also needed a new gate built on the far side, and down the hill there were two hand rails that needed repairs to make them a little more steady. πŸ˜‰

So, I got a call from a previous customer to do some work and decided to check out my previous job to see how things were holding up?
Well, it's been about a year or so and the "storage shed" still looks like new.
Build them right, and they will last! πŸ˜‰

Well, I finished this split rail fence, just before it finished me! πŸ˜‚
This project was truly a pain in the ass! Trying to use my auger near trees is always a bad thing, but the homeowner told me that they knew for sure that the water lines and gas lines were in certain spots and I wouldn't get anywhere near them! Well, guess what? I hit both! Luckily, the gas line was an old gas line and there was no danger of an explosion, just a hard stop when the auger her it. The water line, was "schedule 80" which is very strong, but it felt just like a tree root. So, I went after it with a 16 lb 6' long pry bar and found out that it was a water fountain! 🀯
I quickly got the water turned off and the guys doing the landscaping patched the schedule 80 and I was back to work.
This job fought me on almost every hole. I dug 9 holes, and only 3 of them went the way they were supposed to. 🫀
But the finished product is all that counts, everything is straight and looks beautiful, and I'm proud of my work! πŸ˜‰

My job this week was to replace gates on both sides of this house. Enlarge the gate on the east side from 36" to 48" and give them a nice design.
After looking at the old fence and gate, I realized that the builder didn't have the ability to cut a fence picket so it would just blend in when the size needed it, so he just nailed a full size fence picket over the others! 🀣

Today, I was asked to restore an antique cabinet. The rolling door had come apart and well it's just not quite as valuable when they don't work like they're supposed to. After a little disassembly, I was able to find out how they were held together in the first place, which was 2" strips of canvas. So, I purchased some canvas, cut it into strips and coated them with a "headliner adhesive" incredibly strong glue!
Then was able to put the strips of canvas directly over the other ones on the inside of the cabinet door. πŸ˜‰

This week, I was hired to help make a condo that was abused by it's tenants, to make it sell quicker, for more money! There was a lot wrong with this place and I was just doing some of it. The front of the condo was not even the responsibility of the owners, but the HOA refused to do anything about it, so they asked me to replace the siding & trim, & light. Then I suggested to the owner that the outlets and switches were from the it's and the place may sell quicker and got more money if they were all updated. So, about 40 of them got replaced. The garden window in the kitchen had issues, the wooden base had rotted out, so I was asked to replace it, as well as the base below the sink had the same issues and it also needed to be replaced.
I then mentioned to the owners that the lattice above the porch was in pretty bad shape, so it was taken down and replaced with new lattice.

The other day I received a call from a customer who had a stopped up sink. I tried the usual problems with the P-trap, but that wasn't the issue so it was time to break out the Hydro-jet. The Hydro jet is a powerful water jet that blows water from a pressure washer through a hose attachment that blows the water at a very high rate both forward and back and does an amazing job cleaning out the pipes!

I had a customer come to see me while I was finishing a job last week and said he had a plumber come out and track down a leak in his house and then re-pipe the house. Of course plumbers and electricians never fix what they tear up, and the guy that they sent out tried to charge him for asbestos removal and lead paint. I told him that the house isn't old enough for that, that the guy was just trying to pad his pockets. Well he asked if I could do the job? I told him that I certainly could.
