A data center is, among other things, a very large cooling problem.

You may be asking what a hose and expansion joint company actually supplies to a facility like that? The short answer: the components that let rigid piping survive a system that never stops moving.

Chilled water loops run continuously, and they expand and contract with temperature. Pumps vibrate. Equipment settles. Rigid pipe does not forgive any of that on its own.

Expansion joints absorb thermal growth and movement so the pipe is not transmitting stress into the equipment it is bolted to. Flexible connectors at pump inlets and discharges isolate vibration before it travels through the system. Braided metal hose handles offsets and connections that hard pipe cannot make without a fight.

None of it is glamorous. All of it is the difference between a cooling loop that runs and one that takes the floor down with it.

We have been building these assemblies in Bremen, Georgia since 1963, long before anyone put the words data and center together. The application is new. The engineering problem is not.

Trey Travis sat down with Family Business Magazine for a two-part conversation, and both halves are now out!

In the first, our VP of Operations talks about growing up inside the business his grandfather started in 1963, and about the part of scaling a family company that nobody warns you about. Learning to communicate as a family, not just as a leadership team, turned out to be the hardest part.

The second picks up on why investing in the next generation of employees matters so much to a company like ours, and what taking the long view actually means when you are not answering to quarterly earnings.

That second point is not a small one. A privately held, family-owned company can decide to spend two years training a welder on a product they will not find in any trade school curriculum, because the return shows up in a decade rather than a quarter. We have made that call repeatedly since 1963. It is most of the reason our team now carries more than 500 years of combined experience.

CNBC went looking for the human side of the AI data center boom and ended up in Bremen, Georgia.

The piece examines how data center construction is driving demand for welders, pipefitters, electricians, and HVAC technicians, and what happens to that demand if public opposition slows projects down. Our VP of Operations, Trey Travis, talked about what the last few years have looked like from our floor.

The short version: our workforce has grown roughly 40 percent in 18 months. The components going into those buildings are the ones nobody thinks about until they are missing. Trey described them as "the plumbing for the plumbing."

He also made a point worth repeating. Even a top graduate out of a local trade school needs on-site training before working on this product, because the welding is specialized enough that the schools cannot fully prepare for it. That is exactly why our work-based learning partnerships with area high schools and trade schools matter as much as they do.

If fluid is moving or temperature is changing, there is a hose or an expansion joint somewhere in that system. That has been true for more than 60 years. More people are just noticing now.

Today is Manufacturing Day, and October is Manufacturing Month!

For us that is not an abstraction. There are more than 150 people at our warehouse in Bremen, Georgia, roughly 100,000 square feet, hose assemblies and expansion joints that leave this building cut, fitted, welded, tested, and packed by hand.

Southeastern Hose has been doing this since 1963. Three generations of the same family, and a workforce that has grown about 40 percent in the last 18 months as demand has climbed from data centers, chemical processing, power generation, and industrial facilities across the country.

Manufacturing Day exists because most people have never been inside a shop like ours and may not realize the opportunities that exist in skilled trades and American manufacturing. For the next generation, there’s a lot more opportunity on a manufacturing floor than they might expect.

As we close out of Hose Safety Awareness Month, we are starting where safety actually starts for us.

Fabricating hose assemblies and expansion joints means cutting wire braid, welding stainless, brazing, crimping, and testing. Every one of those steps carries its own hazard profile, and every one calls for its own protection. Cut-resistant gloves for handling braid, because frayed stainless will open a hand faster than most people expect. Welding helmets, shields, and flame-resistant clothing at the weld bays. Eye and face protection during cut-off. Hearing protection where the noise warrants it. Distance and barriers during testing.

None of that is treated as an inconvenience here. A shop that takes its own people's safety seriously is a shop that takes the safety of your assembly seriously. It is the same discipline pointed in two directions.

Congratulations to the Southeastern Hose team members marking work anniversaries this month!

Some of the people on this list have been building assemblies in Bremen for decades. That is not a sentimental point. It is the reason customers call us when the catalog part will not do the job, and it is a large part of why our team's combined experience now passes 500 years.

Today is National Tradesmen Day, recognizing the skilled men and women whose work keeps American industry running!

At Southeastern Hose, welding is at the heart of what we do. Every day in our facility, skilled welders turn individual components into custom hose assemblies and expansion joints built for demanding industrial applications.

It takes more than knowing how to run a bead. It takes an understanding of materials, fit-up, fabrication, quality, and the experience to know when something is right before it ever leaves the shop.

Today, we’re proud to recognize the welders at Southeastern Hose, and skilled tradespeople everywhere, for the craftsmanship, knowledge, and pride they bring to their work.

Twenty-five years.

Today we remember the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, the first responders who ran toward the danger, and the families who have carried that day with them ever since.

We also remember what came next. Ironworkers, welders, equipment operators, and volunteers from all over the country worked the recovery effort at Ground Zero for months, and then spent years rebuilding. American tradespeople showed up, and kept showing up.

Never forget.
