For 45 years, the murder of 23-year-old Yolanda Herrera remained unanswered.

Yolanda was last seen leaving a bar in Universal City, Texas, in April 1981. Investigators preserved DNA evidence from the case, but for decades, there was no match.

Then forensic technology caught up.

Using advanced DNA testing and genetic genealogy, investigators identified Kelly Lee Brower as a suspect. Police say Brower’s DNA matched evidence collected during Yolanda’s autopsy, and authorities say he later confessed to the murder.

He has now been charged with capital murder.

45 years later, Yolanda’s family finally has answers.

Cold cases may grow old.
