🍂🐁 Why Do Pests Prepare for Winter Earlier Than You Think?

With colder temperatures heading our way, we're not the only ones preparing for the change in seasons!

Pests don't wait for the first snowfall to seek shelter. As daylight hours shorten, temperatures drop, and natural food sources become harder to find, many begin searching for warm, protected places to settle in.

☑️ Mice look for small openings around foundations, garages, and utility lines.
☑️ Spiders take advantage of protected spaces around your home.
☑️ Carpenter ants may remain active inside heated structures, especially where moisture-damaged wood is present.

The takeaway? Even if winter still feels a long way off, pests are already making their moves!

Now is the time to be proactive. Our team is here to help keep unwanted guests from making themselves at home. Contact us today at 603-395-9200!

👻 Creepy but TRUE Pest Facts! 🕷️

October is the perfect time for a few pest facts that might give you the chills!

🕷️ Spiders: Some spiders can survive for weeks without food, making quiet basements and storage areas ideal hiding spots.

🐭 Mice: A mouse can squeeze through an opening as small as a dime! That's one reason sealing tiny gaps around your home is so important.

🐜 Carpenter Ants: Unlike termites, carpenter ants don't eat wood. They tunnel through it to build their nests, potentially causing damage over time.

🦟 Mosquitoes: They can detect the carbon dioxide you exhale, helping them locate their next meal!

🏠 The creepiest fact of all? You might not realize pests have moved in until they've already made themselves comfortable!

At Cornerstone, we help homeowners keep unwanted guests where they belong — OUTSIDE!

FALL INVADER SPOTLIGHT: MICE 🐁

Not every fall invader has six legs.

As nights get colder across New England, mice begin looking for reliable sources of warmth, food, water, and shelter. Garages, basements, attics, sheds—and eventually the living areas of your home—can all provide exactly that.

And they don't need a wide-open door. Mice can squeeze through surprisingly small openings, making gaps around foundations, garage doors, utility lines, vents, and exterior penetrations important areas to inspect.

Watch for droppings, gnaw marks, scratching sounds, nesting material, or unexplained activity around stored food.

🍂 Fall prevention tip: Exterior exclusion is one of the most important steps you can take before colder weather settles in.

When it comes to mice, it's much easier to keep them out than deal with an established population indoors.

🍂 FALL INVADER SPOTLIGHT: LADY BEETLES

Ladybugs are good, right? Usually—but large numbers gathering on your house in the fall can be a different story.

🐞 Asian lady beetles commonly gather on sunny, light-colored sides of homes as temperatures cool. From there, they look for tiny openings where they can get inside and spend the winter.

They don't reproduce in your walls or eat your home, but large numbers indoors can become a nuisance. When disturbed, they can also release a yellowish defensive fluid that may stain surfaces.

Fall prevention tip: Check around windows, doors, soffits, siding, vents, and utility penetrations for potential entry points.

A few on the garden? No big deal. Dozens gathering on the house? They're probably looking for winter accommodations.

🍂 FALL INVADER SPOTLIGHT: CLUSTER FLIES

Have you noticed large, slow-moving flies gathering on the sunny side of your home? They could be cluster flies getting ready for winter. 🪰

As temperatures cool in New England, cluster flies look for protected places to overwinter. They can slip through small cracks and gaps around siding, windows, rooflines and vents, settling into wall voids and attics. You may not even notice them until a warm, sunny day causes them to become active around windows.

Unlike typical house flies, cluster flies aren't attracted to garbage or reproducing inside your home. They're simply looking for a warm place to ride out the cold.

👉 Prevention is key: Seal exterior cracks and gaps, repair damaged screens, and check around windows, doors and other potential entry points before colder weather settles in.

While Cornerstone does not treat for cluster flies, understanding why they appear—and taking steps to seal up your home—can help keep these unwanted fall guests outside where they belong.
