Blue Crab
Though our state neighbor to the south, Maryland, is very well known for them, blue crabs are one of the most common and recognizable species of crab in New Jersey. They have one pair of claws, three pairs of jointed walking legs, and a back pair with a flat, paddle shaped digit. These are known as swimmerets, which aid the crab in navigation through the water and make them excellent swimmers. The scientific name for a blue crab, Callinectes sapidus, translates from Latin as, “beautiful swimmer.”

A blue crab’s carapace, or shell, has a brownish-green color on top, and a mature crab’s claws will be bright blue. A female’s claws are also tipped with red. The light-colored underside, or abdomen, of a blue crab will be pointed on a mature male and rounded on a mature female. They can grow up to nine inches in length.

A carapace also has marginal teeth, which are ridges on the outside used to shred and break up food, as crabs do not have teeth in their mouths with which to chew. A blue crab will hold a piece of food in its claws and rub the food against the marginal teeth to break it into smaller pieces to fit into the crab’s mouth.

Like many crustaceans, blue crabs have a varied diet. As active predators, they will forage on fish, mollusks, smaller crabs, and other crustaceans. In turn, they are preyed upon by turtles, large fish, and wading birds. They are also a popular commercial species, harvested for sale and enjoyment by people as well as fish and birds.

Crabs are invertebrates, animals which do not possess an internal skeleton, and as they grow, they must shed their exoskeleton and grow a newer, larger one. After molting, a crab’s body is soft for a period of time as the new exoskeleton grows and hardens, and they can be extremely vulnerable to predators. They are known as, “soft shelled crabs,” during this time.
