Black History Month is the annual celebration of black achievement, culture, and people. In 1926 historian Carter G Woodson declared the second week of February 'Negro History Week' because it coincided with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln on the 12th and Frederick Douglass on the 14th. In 1970 the first Black History Month was celebrated by students at Kent State, and six years later it became nationally recognized.
