This is the single biggest decision most future franchise owners get wrong.

Pick the model that fits your life, your finances, and your risk tolerance; NOT the one that sounds cool.

A business making $120k a year sounds like a dream, right? Not so fast. πŸ›‘

The previous owner might take home $10k a month if they have zero debt. But when you buy that $360k business with a loan, those monthly note payments come straight out of your pocket. That $10k take-home can instantly drop to $5k. Always factor debt service into your pro forma to see if the real payout works for you!

Don't spend it.

If you walk away from your Builder Year with some profit, awesome. That's the goal.

But here's what separates the owners who scale from the ones who plateau:

They REINVEST it.

β†’ Another van for the fleet
β†’ Better equipment
β†’ Doubling down on marketing that's working
β†’ Hiring that first key employee
β†’ Sales training for the team

The owner who takes it all as personal income in Year 1 stays small. The owner who reinvests? They're opening territory #2 by Year 3.

Play the long game.

πŸ‘‡ Are you naturally a saver, spender, or reinvestor?

Passive = stock market, mutual funds, index funds. Franchising = ownership. Even semi passive means SOMETHING.

Don't buy in expecting to do nothing. Buy in expecting to own something.

πŸ‘‡ Would you rather be more hands-on or more hands-off in a business?

The #1 reason people don't move on their dream of business ownership? They assume they can't afford it.

Then they discover there are five (sometimes six) ways to fund a franchise β€” and most of them don't require draining a savings account.

I always recommend comparing at least two options before committing. Rates, terms, timing, and risk vary a LOT.

Which of these did you NOT know existed? Drop the number πŸ‘‡

The right first question?
"What do I actually want to change about my life?"

Answer that. Everything else (the brand, the industry, the investment) flows from it.

πŸ‘‡ If you had to answer in ONE word, what do you want to change most?

A corporate job feels secure... right up until it isn't. πŸ›‘

Instead of waiting for a layoff or burnout to force your hand, build a safety net before you need it. Starting a business on the side gives you an additional income stream and control over your transition to full-time ownership. Plus, you’re not just earning an incomeβ€”you're building equity that can sell for 3x, 4x, or 5x down the road! πŸ“ˆ

Most people focus on the franchise fee and forget the real killer:

Your personal expenses during ramp-up.
Service-based franchise? Up and running in 1-4 months.
Brick and mortar? 7-12 months. Sometimes longer.

If you're leaving your W2 income to launch, who's paying:
β†’ The mortgage/rent
β†’ The groceries
β†’ The student loans
β†’ The car payment
β†’ The health insurance

I always tell our families: build in a 6-month personal expense buffer BEFORE you sign.

Not because the business will fail. But because breathing room is what lets you make smart decisions instead of panic decisions.

πŸ‘‡ What's your personal "peace of mind" buffer number? 3 months, 6 months, or a year?

Most people who start businesses fail because they're guessing.

Wrong pricing. Wrong hires. Wrong marketing. Wrong systems.

In franchising, you get something solo entrepreneurs would kill for:

A DEDICATED COACH.

Right now, the best franchisors are moving to a 10-to-1 or 15-to-1 ratio β€” one experienced coach assigned to just 10-15 franchise owners.

They travel with you. They're your first call when you're stuck. They've seen every mistake and every win across the system.

That's the difference between "figuring it out alone" and "executing with support."

πŸ‘‡ If you had a business coach in your back pocket, what's the FIRST question you'd ask them?
