Part 7: ICML—Different by Design
“GLC and ALC Represent Professional Certifications”

Importantly, GLC and ALC are full certifications on par with their technical counterparts. As with other ICML certifications, candidates must successfully complete a formal training and a proctored exam to earn them.

The GLC requires a minimum of five hours of formal training aligned to the GLC Body of Knowledge, while the ALC requires a minimum of ten hours of formal training aligned to the ALC Body of Knowledge. Each certification requires a 70-question exam with a passing score of 70%, remaining valid for three-years and subject to ICML's standard recertification requirements.

We are excited that the GLC/ALC series provides meaningful validation of lubrication and oil analysis knowledge specifically to help non-technical and cross-functional personnel engage more effectively with their technical colleagues, so they can all work together more effectively to improve program performance and machine reliability.

“The Future of Certification is Holistic”

For lubrication programs to achieve their maximum utility, it had become apparent that the niche basis on which ICML was founded required expansion to include new-to-the-industry candidates (LAT – Lubrication Apprentice Technician) as well as team members who serve the lubrication industry from positions that are not steeped in the technical disciplines of typical machinery lubrication practitioners (GLC – General Lubrication Concepts and ALC – Advanced Lubrication Concepts).

The modern lubrication ecosystem is not sufficiently defined by technicians and engineers alone. Long-term lubrication program success in the field requires an active mutual support culture which extends from the C-suite to the shop floor and everywhere in between. It requires non-technical disciplines to have a fundamental knowledge and perspective which enables meaningful, thoughtful contributions to reliability goals.

Ignoring this reality would be to fall short of ICML’s mission.
