Bredberg CPA, PLLC Helping Landscapers Scale Beyond Seasonality | CPA Expert in Hardscaping Revenue Integration & Profit Growth

Provides comprehensive accounting and tax services for individuals and small business. We are a firm with a reputation for objectivity, competence, and integrity. Apart from producing accurate financials and tax preparation, we strive to grow your business and be a strategic partner in your everyday decision-making. We see many businesses/firms like mine that offer different services on a piece-me

al basis with no real connection with wanting to help the client’s future success. My framework is intended to see a client’s relationship through the entire year into tax season. As a result, they don’t have to resort to hiring multiple accountants/bookkeepers/CPAs/tax professionals.

Running an accounting firm remotely has allowed me to:

1. Leave my W2 role
2. Save on gas
3. Be there for my kids

Random talks in the office have turned into networking with clients.

Monthly forecast calls with the boss to talk about the financials have turned into business advisory for my clients.

Quarterly meetings with the company to talk about if we did or didn’t surpass expectations has turned into weekly CEO meetings for myself to hold me accountable and accomplish goals for the week.

What’s my point? I’m turning time that is for others for myself.

I’m building a brand, identity, vision.

And I understand that time is on my side if I just stay consistent!

⛽ Gas is now over $4.50 a gallon nationally — and for landscapers, that's not just a trip to the pump.

It's truck fuel, mower fuel, blower fuel, w**d whacker fuel... every single day.

Some local landscaping companies are rethinking their routes, starting the season late, or adding fuel surcharges just to keep the lights on.

Others are absorbing the hit and hoping prices drop before they have to pass costs to customers.

If you've noticed your lawn care bill creeping up this spring, this is a big reason why.

Do landscapers favor electric over gas equipment for efficiency?

Depends on the time horizon!

Electric is often more profitable long-term for many operations, especially handhelds and mixed fleets, due to massive savings on fuel.

Moreover, electric can be ~10x less expensive per hour to operate.

Alternatively, gas wins in the short-term for maximum runtime on massive jobs or low-capital startups.

So given the time horizon and where owners are at in their business, many use a hybrid approach.

I would recommend testing on a small scale, calculate your specific hours/fuel/electricity costs, and factor in incentives.

To put it simply, it’s more expensive to purchase electric, but once business gets rolling, it can pay off in the long-run by saving massively in operating costs.

And also keep in mind battery tech continues to improve.

Unlike on cars, batteries on lawn and landscaping equipment are highly underestimated.

Landscapers have to consider the cool-season grasses common in Michigan.

It’s often recommended to have a mowing height of around 3 to 4 inches.

This strikes a good balance between preventing the lawn from drying out…taller grass shades the soil, retains moisture, and encourages deeper roots…

and keeping it looking neatly maintained rather than overgrown!

Going into summer, remember the various grass types:

• Kentucky Bluegrass (very common): 2.5–3.5 inches, often 3–4 in summer.

• Tall Fescue: 3–4 inches (more forgiving of higher cuts).

• Perennial Ryegrass or mixes: Similar, around 2.5–3.5 inches.

• Fine Fescues (shady areas): Can handle 2.5–4 inches.

Overall, the default is 3–3.5 inches as the standard because it looks maintained, promotes health, and reduces callbacks for issues like thinning or w**ds.

What is your overall preference or client’s preference?

10 years ago I started my career in accounting.

I had just graduated from college and looked to climb the corporate ladder.

But, through corporate life, I learned and experienced many things that helped shape me into being self-employed.

Now I carry what I’ve learned and experienced by helping landscaping business owners scale and grow!

It’s now been 3 years that I have been self-employed and I couldn’t be happier!

There’s nothing better than building something that’s yours - and that’s what I enjoy helping others do to!

Intuit (INTU) stock experienced a severe decline today dropping over 50% year-to-date!

Looks like AI integration is fully underway when it comes to new system workflows, less manual data entry, and reorganization of where capital funds get invested.

With around 3,000 jobs cut, it’s clear that AI is here to stay…not only at Intuit, but at most of these Fortune 500 companies.

I think investing in sophisticated AI can help keep improving the tax and accounting space when it comes to Proconnect Tax Online and QuickBooks Online.

But you still need that human element to analyze the work, make it better, and monitor it.

Oh, and maybe improve the customer service!

As a commercial landscaper, what are you doing to create competitive bids?

Here’s what I’m seeing (and hearing from operators):

• Detailed site take-offs and production rates instead of “drive-by” estimates

• Smart tiered pricing (Basic / Standard / Premium) with clear value-adds like sustainability upgrades, smart irrigation, or performance guarantees

• Professional proposals that highlight reliability, SLAs, tech use, and ESG alignment instead of just a bottom-line number

• Strong relationships and follow-up that turn one-time bids into multi-year contracts

Are you winning more on price or on demonstrated value and trust?

What’s one change you’ve made to your bidding process that’s helped you close bigger commercial accounts?

Drop your best tips, wins, or frustrations below 👇

I’d love to hear real strategies from the field!
