News Release: The Brookings Urban Forest Initiative returns this year to help the health and sustainability of trees in the community. 🌳🌍
The 2026 program will kick off on Earth Day – Wednesday, April 22 – and provides residents the chance to plant trees at little or no cost. The City is investing $25,000 in its Urban Forest Initiative this year.
The program is open to City of Brookings residents and is a reimbursement process. Funds are available on a first-come, first-served basis until depleted.
New in 2026: Property owners in Zone 4 (in the Derdall Drive area) and owners of new homes built within the last five years qualify for two trees per property per year. Other properties qualify for one tree. Find a link to the map of Zone 4 and new builds at https://ow.ly/B8BS50YNJNt
This year’s reimbursement amounts are:
🌳 up to $100 per tree
🌳 an additional $25 for trees planted in front yards.
🌳 a $50 reimbursement for treatment of an Ash or Elm tree
Eligible participants will need to first buy a tree on the City’s approved list. Participants will then need to take the receipt for their purchase to the Parks, Recreation and Forestry office (520 Third St., Ste 130) during regular business hours. A city check will be issued for reimbursement.
Tree purchase receipts or treatment receipts must be dated April 22 or later to be eligible for reimbursement.
