Why should you use a red hue for your child's night light?
1. Assists in melatonin production:
⭐ Red light is a natural way of getting our body to produce melatonin, the sleep hormone

2. Helps fear of the dark:
⭐ Starting around 18 months, your toddler might express a fear of the dark. At this time you can introduce a night light
⭐ Using a red light won't be stimulating to your child like a white or blue like would

3. Red light regulates circadian rhythm:
⭐ Red light can help our bodies establish a strong circadiam rhythm because of the way it helps us produce melatonin

4. Counters blue light:
⭐ Even children are exposed to lots of blue light during the day. Blue light is a stimulant and can affect sleep
⭐ Having a red hue night light can help their bodies produce melatonin, countering the blue light exposure

5. Mimics sunset:
⭐ Red light mimics the sunlight, which signals to our bodies that it is time to go to sleep

How do you know your child is ready to be sleep trained? And more importantly, how do you know YOU are ready to sleep train your child?

I find that readiness is equally important for both baby and parents. Because your child's success is dependent on your ability to commit to your sleep training method and efforts.

⭐ AGE: I believe that babies can be sleep trained when they start 12 weeks. I successfully sleep trained both of my kids at 11 weeks and have had clients as young as 13 weeks. It is not a popular belief but it can be done. I like to help babies get ahead of their 4 month regression. They might still be affected but you won't see the disruption at the full extent.

⭐ TIMING: Do not sleep train your child if
- πŸ€’ he is sick
- ✈️ you have upcoming travel and cannot dedicate time to the process. It takes 2-4 weeks to sleep train a baby
- πŸ’‰ after vaccines. Babies react to vaccines differently and could be irritable or feverish.

⭐ YOUR MINDSET: Your child's success will be based on your mindset. When you can committ to sleep training and stay consistent with the training, then you AND your baby will succeed! πŸ’―

Here are some tips to help manage sleep before you sleep train

1. Set up a sleep-inducing sleep environment
⭐ dark environment
⭐ white noise on continuously
⭐ 68-72 degrees

2. Give baby opportunity to practice independent sleep
⭐ Even if you're used to holding or rocking baby to sleep. Give baby to the opportunity to fall asleep independently
⭐ Use first nap to practice since that's the easiest nap to catch

3. Follow eat play sleep, observe wake windows and sleepy cues
⭐ Eat, play, sleep - baby eats, then plays, then sleeps
⭐ use wake windows as guidelines and watch sleepy cues. We don't want an overtired baby

4. Accept help and take care of yourself
⭐ This is most important! If you need help, ask for it
⭐ Take care of yourself because you need energy to take care of your baby!

Here are 4 tips for creating healthy sleep habits for your newborn

1. πŸ‘€ Put baby down to sleep awake. Like eyes completely open. This will give them the chance to learn to fall asleep independently

2. πŸ—“οΈ Create a sleep routine for baby. Have a sleep routine for nap and nights. This will signal to baby that it's time to wind down and sleep.

3. β˜€οΈπŸŒ™ Help your baby figure out night vs. day. Take baby out for walks and expose them to sunlight. Cap naps at 2 hours.

4. πŸ₯± Observe baby's sleepy cues and wake windows. This will help prevent an overtired baby.

False!

Sometimes when a child sleeps too much during the day, their night sleep can be impacted.

We want to
βœ… cap long naps at 2 hours
βœ… cap the last nap by a certain time depending on age
βœ… wake baby by 7:30am to start the day. This protects the first nap

A lot of times an earlier bedtime can prevent a lot of sleep struggles. When your LO is overtired, their bodies produce more cortisol. Cortisol can cause night wakings and early risings.

If your LO had a bad nap day, woke up early in the morning or is displaying symptons of being overtired, then it is crucial ot offer an earlier bedtime.

If you're unsure but feeling like your child could benefit from an earlier bedtime, be conservative with timing. 1️⃣5️⃣ mins earlier is always better.

Sometimes p*e can interrupt a child's sleep. Here's how to manage:

⭐ Avoid giving your toddler a full cup of water or milk before bed. Set a "last call" for water

⭐ Your diaper / pull up should work hard for you. Find a brand or a combination of products that work for you. Diaper + spoosie? Pull up + spoosie? Figure out what works for you

⭐ Help your child with a dream p*e. Soon after midnight, help your toddler out of bed and take him to the bathroom. Do this as quietly as possible and try not to get him fully awake

⭐ In case there is a leak and your toddler wakes up, move swiftly and quietly. Do not turn on lights. Do not speak to him. Just change the sheets and PJs and put him back down to sleep. Use a waterproof mattress cover for extra protection

⭐ A baby's natural sleep cycle is 30-45 mins, meaning when they fall asleep, they will naturally wake by the 45 min mark. This is why a lot of parents experience short naps of 30-45 mins.

⭐ For long naps to be restorative, they need to be at least 1 hour long, which means baby needs to be able to fall back asleep after sleeping 1 cycle. This is a key skill that can be learned.

βœ… Wake windows are great general guidelines to help you gauge around when baby should go down for naps and sleep.

βœ… Wake windows start when your child comes out of the crib and ends when she is placed in the crib.

βœ… This amount of time includes feed, playtime and her sleep routine.

βœ… HOWEVER, wake windows are not the end all be all. It is also important to understand the best age-approriate time your child should nap / go to sleep.

Transitioning out of the swaddle is one of the first big milestones for a baby!

⭐ When baby is showing signs of rolling, then it's time to transition out of the swaddle and into a sleep sack. More on why use a sleep sack below.

⭐ Now, swaddle transition:
1. Take one arm out of the swaddle. Sleep like this for 1-3 nights

2. Take both arms out of the swaddle. Swaddle baby around the chest. Sleep like this for 1-3 nights

3. Remove the swaddle completely. Use a sleep sack going forward.

⭐ Sleep sacks signal to them that it is sleep time. We use a merino wool one that regulates temperature. It keeps them warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

⭐ Sleep sacks also keep them from climbing out of their cribs.

⭐ Sleep sacks are safe for newborns and I highly recommend using one after transitioning out of the swaddle.

This is a question I get a lot... what is a "normal" amount of time kids take to fall asleep at night? 15 mins? 30 mins? 45 mins?

This isn't such an easy question to answer because it all depends on your child:
βœ… What is "normal" for your child?
⭐ Every kid is different and while it's nice to know what other kids are doing, it's important to also know what's normal for your child
⭐ Some kids need longer to unwind after a long day
⭐ Some kids fall asleep as soon as their head hits the mattress

βœ… Is your child going through a developmental leap, regression, major changes in life?
⭐ Development, regressions or changes in your LO's life (starting a new school, moving, new sibling) could temporarily disrupt your child's sleep

βœ… Did your child have an extraordinary day?
⭐ After a day that is out of the ordinary, your child might need a bit longer to decompress
