Hinsdy has completed the WALTER process.

Depending on his condition and assessment, his next step may be resale after testing and refurbishment, responsible recovery of usable components, or environmentally sound downstream processing.
What matters is that his journey is intentional. He is not simply discarded. His path is documented, his data is protected, his potential is assessed, and the most responsible available option is selected.
This is the difference between disposal and responsible electronics recovery.

When an item is not marketable as a complete device, WALTER evaluates the next responsible option.

Some equipment can support component harvesting, allowing usable parts to remain in circulation. Other items are consolidated and directed to qualified downstream partners for appropriate treatment.

The goal is not to force every device into one outcome. The goal is to choose the best available path — based on condition, safety, recoverable value, and responsible downstream processing.

This is where the circular economy becomes practical: preserving useful components where possible and responsibly processing what cannot be reused.

Step 4: Component recovery and responsible downstream handling.

Hinsdy has been identified as potentially marketable. But before he can move forward, he has to pass an important test.

Marketable equipment goes through a process of testing, refurbishment, and secure data handling. The goal is to determine whether the device can safely and reliably continue its life.

For organizations, the data-security element is essential. Retired equipment can still contain sensitive business, customer, employee, or operational information. Responsible recovery must therefore protect both the device’s potential and the organization’s data.

If Hinsdy passes, he can move toward storage and resale. If he fails, the journey does not stop: WALTER identifies the most responsible alternative path for his materials and components.

At WALTER, retired electronics are not treated as one undifferentiated waste stream. Each item is assessed to determine its potential and the most responsible next step.

Is the device still marketable? Could it be refurbished and reused? Does it hold recoverable parts? Or is it no longer suitable for reuse and better directed into a responsible downstream recycling pathway?

After years of work, Hinsdy has reached the end of his first life at the office. Like many retired computers, he could easily be stored away, forgotten, or treated as waste.

But an unused device still has a story to tell.
This Climate Week, WALTER will follow Hinsdale’s journey — from secure pickup and intake, through sorting, testing, data protection, refurbishment, component recovery, and responsible downstream processing.

Because responsible electronics management is not simply about getting rid of old equipment. It is about making thoughtful decisions at every step: protecting data, recovering value, keeping useful materials in circulation, and avoiding landfill.

Two truckloads, one evening, zero disruption.

Doing Things Media needed their Manhattan office relocated between two buildings — after hours, inside a single controlled window, with demanding building access at both ends.
WALTER handled it from 3:00 PM to 10:30 PM. Two full truckloads of furniture, equipment, and AV assets. More than 32 elevator movements across both properties. Three televisions dismounted, wrapped, transported, and reinstalled at the destination.
