Just wrapped up the semester at NYU, where I had the honor of teaching “Imaging for Conservators” once again to 6 excellent graduate students.

This c. 1512 Italian painting, Girolamo Romanino’s “Madonna and Child with Saint James Major and Saint Jerome,” comes from the Samuel H. Kress collection and the High Museum of Art, Atlanta.

The painting was receiving after-treatment documentation, here shown in visible light and ultraviolet (UVA) to record its current condition. Ultraviolet shows us some things we can’t easily see in visible light, such as repairs, because some materials fluoresce and others do not.

For 30 years, NYU’s Institute of Fine Arts’ Conservation Center has taken care of Kress paintings owned by museums around the US. This is in large part thanks to the work of Prof. Dianne Modestini, my wonderful colleague who is now retiring. Cheers to Dianne, and congrats to my students on a great semester! 🥂 🎉

Recently I took an incredible workshop on advanced technologies for treating artworks using nanostructured fluids and gel systems. This workshop happened at and was taught by Professors Baglioni and Poggi of the University of Florence chemistry department.

In this photo I’m using one of their systems to remove an upper layer of acrylic paint from a lower one- a very tricky task that cannot be safely accomplished with normal solvents. The physico-chemical mechanism here is “de-wetting”- a controlled detachment of a layer. If you’d like to read more, see the publications on greenart-project.eu.

The painting shown here is actually one I made in 2019 during a prior conservation project at the same museum- in collaboration with other conservators ( et al) who were also testing methods for stabilizing cracked paint in a Franz Kline painting.
