Lighttells AW-600 is the professional grade water activity meter our lab uses every day. In green coffee, water activity is one measurement we use to estimate the quality of the coffee’s drying and its potential shelf life. Every coffee lot we bring in goes through the Lighttells MD-500 for moisture and density, and then our AW-600 unit, so together they give great insight into the overall quality of a coffee. For roasters, water activity can indicate how much energy is required to develop a coffee, saving time and coffee in profile development. In the coffee industry we recommend this as an indispensable tool for any complete quality control process, whether that’s at a farm, exporter, importer, roaster or other QC lab. The Arc S is the smaller sibling to the Arc 800, and it is an incredible drum-based profile and sample roaster. Equipped with fast RTD probes, it is capable of connecting to both Artisan and Cropster. Due to its smaller size, preheating super quick, and from there can roast back to back batches for hours on end. It can comfortably roast 80-200 grams, but we prefer the 120-150 gram range. Fully manual, the Arc S offers gas, airflow, and drum speed adjustments. Available in a few configurations (1, 2, 3, or even 4 barrels), we have a 3 barrel system here at the warehouse with two hooked up to natural gas, and one on 220v electrical. It’s a niche roaster, but one that absolutely aces what it sets out to do. Each barrel is $1,000 off, our steepest discount offered this sale!

Another piece of equipment we use every day, the Lighttells MD-500 provides quick and accurate measurements. Our sister company, Crop to Cup, uses the MD-500 moisture meter in their quality lab for evaluating all samples for purchasing consideration and the density reading guides our sample roasting protocol. The Kaffelogic Nano 7 has been revolutionary in our workflow here at Showroom and at our sister company Crop to Cup. Sampling on demand with no warm up, extreme portability, and repeatable ex*****on of our own sample profiles leads to the Nano 7 being our roaster of choice in the field (we have worked with several partner labs integrating Nano 7s into their workflow), and in our own lab. We have extensive experience tweaking and repairing these units, and are really impressed with both the hardware and software which allows for a lot of control. On the flip side, we also will use these for office coffee using the new KL Washed and KL Natural profiles for some hands off roasting (still keeping an eye on it for safety!). The original Le Nez Du Cafe is still a formidable teaching tool and has 36 scents to train your palate on. Recently superseded by its more expansive (and also on sale) 60 scent 2.0 brother, the original still is great for teaching, learning, and training in the lab or at home!
