The bigger the flagpole, the more important the planning.

This 120' flagpole in Mount Dora, Florida is flying a massive 30' × 60' American flag – and projects of this size involve a lot more than choosing a pole and digging a hole.

Before installing a large commercial flagpole, you may need to account for local building and zoning requirements, engineered foundation plans, property setbacks, wind-load requirements, utility locations and, depending on the height and location, FAA review.

And those requirements can vary from one project to the next.

The takeaway? Check first, build second. Permitting and site requirements should be part of the conversation early, especially when you're planning a flagpole of this scale.

How tall can you make a flagpole?

The answer isn't just, "How tall do you want it?"

Local zoning rules can set maximum flagpole heights — and once you go beyond them, your project may need additional approval.

Here's a real-world example:

A car dealership in Mesquite, Texas recently proposed two 150' flagpoles, each designed to fly a flag approximately 40' × 80'.

Mesquite normally permits flagpoles up to 75'. Anything taller requires a Special Exception from the Board of Adjustment. The city also increases required property-line setbacks for poles taller than 30'.

That's why we always recommend researching your local requirements before finalizing the pole.

Planning to fly more than one flag? Don’t forget to factor that in when choosing your flagpole height.

Each additional flag takes up vertical space, so a pole that looks perfectly proportioned with one flag can start to feel crowded once you add a second or third.

If you know you want to fly an American flag along with a state, military, company, or other flag, plan for that before you choose your pole. Going a little taller may give each flag the space it needs to fly properly — and create a much better overall display.

And remember: flag size matters too. The number and size of the flags you plan to fly should all be considered when selecting the right flagpole.

Your flagpole doesn’t have to be silver 👀

While natural satin aluminum is our standard — and most popular — finish, there are plenty of other options depending on the look you want and where your flagpole will be installed.

✨ Natural Satin: classic, versatile and works beautifully in most settings

🌊 Anodized: available in clear, dark bronze and black, with added durability that makes it an especially good choice for coastal environments

🎨 Powder Paint: available in white, silver, dark bronze and black for a more customized look

And if none of those quite fit your project? Custom colors are available, too.

If you’ve been shopping for a flagpole, you’ve probably seen the terms internal halyard and external halyard. So what’s the difference, and why would someone choose internal?

With an internal halyard system, the cable and operating mechanism are concealed inside the flagpole rather than running along the outside.

That comes with a few big advantages:

🔒 More security: the operating mechanism is protected behind a lockable access door, helping prevent unauthorized lowering or removal of the flag.

🔇 Less noise: no external rope means no halyard slapping against the pole on windy days.

✨ A cleaner look: with the operating system tucked inside, you get a sleek, uninterrupted flagpole – one reason internal halyard systems are especially popular for commercial and architectural installations.

💪 Easier operation for larger flags: a hand-crank winch provides mechanical advantage, making it easier to raise and lower heavier commercial flags.

🌦️ Protected components: keeping the cable and operating components inside the pole also helps shield them from direct exposure to rain, ice and UV.

Is an internal halyard necessary for every flagpole? Definitely not.

But if security, appearance, quieter operation, or handling a larger flag are priorities, it may be well worth the upgrade.

We were honored to supply and install this 150-foot walnut brown Landmark Series flagpole at Firm Foundation Academy in Ladysmith, Wisconsin.

Flying high is a 30' × 60' nylon American flag, illuminated each night by three 400W LED flood lights for a display that's visible day and night.

It's projects like these that remind us a flagpole can become more than just a landmark – it becomes a symbol for an entire community.

So many people buy the wrong size American flag.

A flag that’s too large can put unnecessary stress on your flagpole and hardware, while one that’s too small can look out of proportion.

The right size depends on the height of your pole.

Not sure what size you need?

Drop your flagpole height in the comments (or tell us where you're planning to install it), and we'll help you figure out the right size.
