For this week PENSA Slice, we’re taking a deep dive into the Cintas Hospital Privacy Curtains, designed to address the cumbersome nature of changing and cleaning hospital curtains❕

Hospital curtains provide privacy and comfort for patients; however, they also harbor something far less welcome: bacteria and viral pathogens. A study in the American Journal of Infection Control found that 87.5% of hospital privacy curtains test positive for MRSA after just 14 days. The reason: traditional curtains are a hassle to clean and expensive to replace, taking roughly 30 min to remove and replace just one curtain, causing staff to not clean them as often as needed.

Cintas Corporation and PENSA worked together to make the cleaning of hospital curtains something staff can easily and consistently keep up with… in under a minute.

The Cintas Privacy Curtain features an innovative zipper system that allows the fabric panel to separate completely from the mesh. The zipper starts at an ergonomic height and arcs around the panel, making it quick and easy to install in seconds. An extended zipper pull also brings the zipper back within comfortable reach, allowing even shorter crew members to remove the panel without stretching or bending.

What used to take 30 minutes now takes less than a minute. Designed with simplicity and ergonomics in mind, the Cintas Hospital Privacy Curtains creates a safer environment for their staff, patients, and patients’ loved ones.

Meet the Comia Smart Nursing Pillow, the future of breastfeeding❕

In honor of National Breastfeeding Month, we're spotlighting a project close to our hearts. We partnered up with Comia to tackle the problem of accurate nursing data tracking and management. With the mother and newborn in mind, Comia transforms a simple nursing pillow into a revolutionary, one-of-a-kind product that not only lightens the burden of mothers but also allows them to fully enjoy bonding time with their baby.

For this week’s PENSA Slice, we’re looking back at the One Drop Blood Glucose Meter, designed around a simple idea: a medical device shouldn’t make you feel sick every time you use it❕

Traditional BGMs, along with the black bag of accessories that are always carried with them, were clinically functional, but often clunky, complicated and unmistakably medical. For someone managing diabetes every day, that experience can become a constant reminder of illness.

With One Drop, we wanted to flip that cycle.

Clinical accuracy was table stakes. The bigger opportunity was to create something people actually wanted to use: a lifestyle device that felt considered, personal and encouraging. An experience that could make daily management feel less like treating a disease and more like taking care of yourself.

Because better experiences drive better habits. Better habits can drive better outcomes.

That’s where design can have a real clinical impact.

Invention has never been a single spark for us. It's the quiet work of paying attention: to the small frustrations no one even notices anymore, to the details everyone else scrolls past.

Great design doesn't start with an idea. It starts with people. Before we design anything, we ask who it's for, why is there a problem, and what are the possibilities.

We build, we test, and we build again. Because the answers are never in the talking, they're in the making.

That's been the PENSA belief for 20 years, and it's why invention is still at the center of everything we do❕

Working within Labnet’s durable, cost-effective electromechanical platform, Pensa re-engineered the vial holder with two tool-free adjustable wings. A precise combination of O-rings and surface geometry allows the wings to rotate continuously while holding securely at any angle. PC/ABS provides the durability needed to withstand daily use and frequent cleaning in laboratory environments.

For this week's serving of PENSA Slice, we're starting things off with the Labnet Tube Rotator, the product that kicked off our journey into medical device design ❕

Before 2007, lab agitators locked technicians into one single, rigid angle at a time. No flexibility, no room to adapt. PENSA saw an opportunity: how can lab techs access any level of agitation that is desired without the use of extra tools?

The result was the Tube Rotator, the first ever continuously adjustable liquid agitator, with six plates that hold most vial diameters and lengths. Its rotisserie-style split platform allowed techs to freely adjust angles from 0° to 90°, all in a compact, portable design.

The industry took notice. Not only was it Labnet’s fastest seller but it also earned PENSA both the MDEA (Medical Design Excellence Award) and Good Design Award in 2008.

Nearly two decades later, it's still a great example of how far thoughtful, user first design can go ❕

In 2005, Marco Perry and Kathy Larchian set out to bridge the gap between product design, engineering, and business strategy. Where others saw constraints, they saw an opportunity to build a firm that brought these disciplines together from day one.

Three years later, Mark Prommel joined as the Design Lead, now Partner, adding a visionary spark that elevated Pensa's design language and deepened our commitment to invention.

The vision was clear from the start. Not just to design and build, but to be present and work side by side with clients every step of the way, translating complex ideas into tangible solutions. Earning trust not only as engineers, designers, and strategists, but as advisors as well.

20 years later, that vision remains a part of our DNA ❕

Meet the One Health Biosensor!

We collaborated with One Health to revamp their microneedle technology into a next-gen intradermal CGM device that puts comfort and accessibility first.

The result: a health ritual that feels less clinical and more empowering
