For this week's PENSA Slice, we're spotlighting WoodMates, the first suite of reusable, padded tools designed exclusively for outdoor wood staining❕

Most staining tools follow the same pattern: disposable foam applicators, used once and thrown away. Multiply that across every deck, fence, and railing project in the country, and it adds up to a lot of unnecessary waste for a job that happens once a season.

Mr. Longarm, the leading maker of extension poles and painting tools, saw an opportunity to design it differently and came to PENSA for help.

We built WoodMates around durability instead of disposability: a contour tool for curved surfaces, a detail applicator for narrow cracks, and a double-end tool for hard to reach spots, each using reusable, durable padded materials designed to outlast a single project and be used again season after season.

Because sustainable design isn't only about new materials. It's about rethinking whether something needs to be disposable at all.

We also led the full brand experience, developing the logo, packaging, and product system to make that shift in purpose clear the moment someone picks it up off the shelf.

Exciting news today!

PENSA has been recognized by Fast Company’s 2026 Innovation by Design Awards for our work on the Comia Smart Nursing Pillow. Previously named runner up in the 2026 Core77 Design Awards, the Comia Smart Nursing Pillow has now also earned an Honorable Mention in the Health and Wellness Design category by Fast Company.

This first of its kind smart nursing pillow was designed with both baby and mother in mind, tackling the challenge of accurate nursing data tracking while helping mothers stay present and fully enjoy bonding time with their baby.

Huge congratulations to the incredible team at Comia for their vision and dedication. This recognition is a proud moment for innovation in maternal and infant care.

For this week PENSA Slice, we’re taking a deep dive into the Cintas Hospital Privacy Curtains, designed to address the cumbersome nature of changing and cleaning hospital curtains❕

Hospital curtains provide privacy and comfort for patients; however, they also harbor something far less welcome: bacteria and viral pathogens. A study in the American Journal of Infection Control found that 87.5% of hospital privacy curtains test positive for MRSA after just 14 days. The reason: traditional curtains are a hassle to clean and expensive to replace, taking roughly 30 min to remove and replace just one curtain, causing staff to not clean them as often as needed.

Cintas Corporation and PENSA worked together to make the cleaning of hospital curtains something staff can easily and consistently keep up with… in under a minute.

The Cintas Privacy Curtain features an innovative zipper system that allows the fabric panel to separate completely from the mesh. The zipper starts at an ergonomic height and arcs around the panel, making it quick and easy to install in seconds. An extended zipper pull also brings the zipper back within comfortable reach, allowing even shorter crew members to remove the panel without stretching or bending.

What used to take 30 minutes now takes less than a minute. Designed with simplicity and ergonomics in mind, the Cintas Hospital Privacy Curtains creates a safer environment for their staff, patients, and patients’ loved ones.

For this week’s PENSA Slice, we’re looking back at the One Drop Blood Glucose Meter, designed around a simple idea: a medical device shouldn’t make you feel sick every time you use it❕

Traditional BGMs, along with the black bag of accessories that are always carried with them, were clinically functional, but often clunky, complicated and unmistakably medical. For someone managing diabetes every day, that experience can become a constant reminder of illness.

With One Drop, we wanted to flip that cycle.

Clinical accuracy was table stakes. The bigger opportunity was to create something people actually wanted to use: a lifestyle device that felt considered, personal and encouraging. An experience that could make daily management feel less like treating a disease and more like taking care of yourself.

Because better experiences drive better habits. Better habits can drive better outcomes.

That’s where design can have a real clinical impact.

A precise combination of O-rings and surface geometry allows the wings to rotate continuously while holding securely at any angle.
