The First in Three Generations!
I recently realized I am the first person in at least three generations on both sides of my family to earn a college degree. While my grandparents had worked as professionals in service, union, medical, and municipal fields, and my parents attended college, none had graduated. The same was true for my extended family over these generations.
I began college at 17 in the spring of 1993, pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, and completed three years. In the spring of 1996, I became pregnant. Although I finished that semester, I did not complete my degree until spring 2005, as I needed to work full-time and care for my daughter in the interim.
Despite my professional and entrepreneurial success, I have often struggled with the fact that it took me 12 years, rather than four, to complete my degree.
Recently, I have let go of this mental barrier, which had prevented me from fully appreciating the significance of May 16, 2005. On that hot day at Long Island University in Brooklyn, I earned my degree. My maternal grandmother, aunt, and mother were present, and I am grateful they witnessed this pivotal moment in our family’s legacy before they passed away.
At this stage of my life, I am learning to celebrate achievements, even if they take longer to accomplish. I believe greater success still lies ahead. Although it took me 12 years, I was the first in at least three generations to earn a degree, which I consider a significant accomplishment.... It's "kinda" awesome!
I hope my story inspires another. Have a great week, family, on purpose!
