🚨Attention: $100 is on the table.🚨

The Committee has never paid for one before and would like it noted. This is not a bribe. It is a courtesy extended to people with opinions.

A social athletic club is not finished until the people in it say what’s missing. So, for once, the Committee is asking. Pick one:
🏋️ A gym
🧘 Pilates and yoga
🧊 Sauna and cold plunge
💻 Coworking

The Chairman abstained on the grounds that he does not exercise and does not work. The Pro voted for a second court, which was not on the list. The Barman voted for the sauna and declined to say why. Nicole is counting.

Conditions, as minuted:
— Complete the survey. Link in bio. Nicole can tell if you didn’t.
— State your vote in the comments. The Committee prefers its opinions in writing.
— Tag someone who would vote differently. The Committee likes to hear the other side, briefly.
— Follow Goodland. Credit is for members of the account, not visitors to it.

The $100 club credit is waiting for you when we open. Members who vote for coworking are reminded that the bar already has outlets.

The Chairman wants to tell a story about a club he played at in Forest Hills. A member named Leonard Pruitt came in for a Saturday morning doubles match in 1987 and left on the Tuesday. He ate at the bar. He slept in the pro shop. When his wife called, the front desk told her he was on court. He was not on court. He was doing the crossword.

The club closed at ten. Pruitt asked why. The club is still thinking about it.

Goodland opens at six and closes at midnight. Pilates, run club, four courts, a bar, and a chair that is nobody’s. Pruitt would have liked it. He is on the waitlist.

The survey is in the bio. Membership is capped. Fill it out before he does.

Meet the Chairman.

Ambrose “Cap” Whitlock arrived in Bombay in 1976 on a posting he describes as “administrative.” He knew no one. A man at the hotel told him to go to the gymkhana, Bombay’s word for a social athletic club: a veranda, a bar, a few courts, and rules nobody has read - so he did, and he stayed for a “while”.

He played tennis in the mornings, squash when it rained, table tennis when the squash court was taken, and cards every evening with men whose names he still uses as passwords. On the days he didn’t play, he went anyway. He had lunch. He read the paper. He has described this period as “the busiest I have ever been.”

He came home to New York in the 90’s and spent the next fourteen years on the club circuit — Forest Hills, Long Island, Westchester — winning enough to be remembered and losing enough to be invited back given that he paid for registration fees. He stopped in 1994. He has not said why, and the Committee has stopped asking. He has not held a racquet since.

When he learned what was being built at Goodland, he made one telephone call, from a landline, and took the chair. His instructions were brief. A social athletic club, in the heart of the city, for the people who live in it. A place to play, a place to eat, a place to sit down. Members are asked to do at least one.
He will take questions at some point in the future. We encourage you to start asking.

Welcome to Goodland, a Social Athletic Club with Outposts at Williamsburg and Forest Hills.

The previous management has been replaced. The Committee thanks them for their service, wishes them well, and has changed the locks.

Ambrose “Cap” Whitlock II, has been appointed Chairman. His mandate is to restore the classic prestige of the 1990s: collars up, wooden racquets, one newspaper, no phones at the bar. He was found in the mustard chair and has agreed to keep it. His first act was to ban the word “wellness.” His second was to ask for a towel.

Under his tenure the Club has acquired a chef, a bar, a matcha counter, Pilates, a run club, four courts at Williamsburg, and five at Forest Hills, one of which is badminton. He has approved Pilates on the understanding that it is a kind of stretching. He has asked where the run club runs to, and has not accepted the answer. He has seen badminton. He has described it as tennis that gave up.

The photographs are from the season ahead. The Committee saw no reason to wait for it.

Members are welcome. Guests are welcome. Tennis players are welcome. Tennis is not.

Two months ago, Goodland was forced out of the place where it began.

We could have closed the chapter. Instead, we came back bigger with two new homes recognized by The Real Deal among NYC’s five largest retail leases of August:

📍 98-22 Queens Boulevard — 15,500 SF
📍 105 North 13th Street, Williamsburg — 14,600 SF

More than 30,000 square feet of courts, lounges and clubhouse space, built for a community worth leaving home for.

To everyone who played, supported and believed in Goodland through the uncertainty: this comeback belongs to you.

New neighborhoods. New courts. Same Goodland community.

See you on the court. 🏓

This isn’t our first rodeo. For some people this is aspirational, for us it’s a nice start. You can copy our past but can’t predict our future (we can predict yours tho)
