Ganbatte 2020
Here is part of a letter I just wrote which I feel would be worth sharing as it has been a challenging time for us all:
I'm surprised. Although I haven't seen you practicing with me frequently, especially since Covid, I've seen your dedication and progress via the improvements in your movements/kamae. I would think your progress would be a sign of an underlying passion/understanding of how important training is for your health (physical and more) and to be a good role model for everyone you meet. Most of the people in our slice of reality need more role models.
I imagine you are struggling. Covid, and your age (a self-questioning age for self-aware men), and life experiences (living in NYC is very difficult if you are not wealthy), have made the struggle quite profound. The path of training is a path of searching for truth as one can't hide behind conforming to group consensus. The practitioner of Ninpo is always balancing on the search for truth, knowing that on either side is the abyss of common group-think. This balancing act can be very difficult, as it is far easier to fit in with the groups.
I have thought about myself quitting over the years. The path has been very challenging and the past few years have been increasingly difficult. Personally I have felt broken many times, however I am still here. Within a certain context and perspective, I really like what I have heard Kacem say a few times over the decade(s), "All that matters is who is the last man standing."
The Dojo will be here, if "the way of the last man standing" begins resonating with you again. Good luck!
Sincerely,
Josh
