At BAT Clay Studio, ceramics is more than a practice, it’s a community built around making. Founded by Meg Metzger, the studio was created to fill a gap in South Brooklyn, bringing much needed communal ceramics space to the neighborhood for experienced makers looking to create, experiment, and grow alongside one another.

Located inside Brooklyn Army Terminal, the studio combines professional workspaces, shared equipment, and an on site showroom featuring work made right at BAT. Architect Cass Gilbert incorporated a central atrium inspired by industrial layouts that prioritized efficiency, natural light, and movement. The open design allowed goods and people to move seamlessly across floors while bringing daylight deep into the building. More than a century later, that same structure continues to support how space operates today, proving that thoughtful design can stand the test of time.

A landmarked campus on the Sunset Park waterfront, designed by Cass Gilbert and built in 1919. The same concrete, the same atrium, the same piers. Brooklyn Army Terminal has been part of this Brooklyn shoreline for over a century and it is not going anywhere.

Start the morning at BAT Clay's showroom, grab a slice at Pete's Brooklyn's Eats, and end the day by the pier.

BAT is more than a workplace. It is a place to move through, take a break, and experience the waterfront in between it all.

The Sunset Park waterfront is open and is worth the trip. Pier 4 is one of those spots that belongs to the whole neighborhood, and spring is the best time to rediscover it. Come for the views, stay for a minute longer than you planned.

Cass Gilbert designed Brooklyn Army Terminal in 1918, and what he built was unlike anything that had come before it. At the time of completion it was the largest poured-concrete structure in the world, engineered for scale and speed. The staggered balconies inside Building B's atrium were not decorate; they were designed specifically for efficient cargo loading.
