Happy Father’s Day!

This Father’s Day, I am on a different journey. It is the first Father’s Day that my father gets to spend in heaven.

I do not know yet all of the emotions that today will bring but what I do know is that (i) I feel blessed to have spent the first 40 years of my life receiving the love that only a father can give his daughter, (ii) I have a strong command of my paternal family history in Panamá and Barbados because of the countless hours that you endured my never ending questions, (iii) I learned to be the epitome of grace under fire while simultaneously refusing to suffer fools because of you 🤣, (iv) I’m obsessed with music and dancing (especially soca and salsa) because celebrating Black culture was a significant part of your life’s work and (v) I am proud to be your daughter not because of everything you accomplished and how much you meant to our community but because of everything that you have taught me, the unconditional love you have given me and the person I am today could not have been without you.

So to the man whose face I stole (evidence provided in the baby pic), te amo siempre Daddy. Having you as a father was one of the greatest gifts I have ever received. Happy first Father's Day in heaven Daddy!

I do not drink often. In fact, it would be completely fair to call me a light weight 🤷🏾‍♀️ but one thing that I adore and never turn down is champagne and the sparkling wine in rosé that we were given as a welcome drink at the first winery on our tour did not disappoint.⁣

This is 40! 🎂

This year took all of my plans for it, crumpled them up and threw them out the window. Rather than choosing anxiety and stress, I chose grace.

And perhaps that is the best gift 🎁 that this past year has given me; the ability to unapologetically find and claim my sources of calm and peace in the never ending storm of 2020 notwithstanding being a Type A- personality. 🤷🏾‍♀️

That being said, I’m good on the madness 2020 has brought 😂🤣 so my birthday wish is that we don’t experience this level of life disruption again for a long, long time.

My favorite part of my trip to Nyack was learning that it was likely a station along the Underground Railroad. This stream where I am standing is believed to be the location that those who were traveling north in search of Freedom traveled until they arrived at a safe house owned by a real estate investor and business woman named Cynthia Hesdra. Cynthia Hesdra was an abolitionist (who had first-hand experience of what it meant to be enslaved in New York State until she (along with her husband) purchased her freedom). After her emancipation, she built a series of businesses in Nyack, NY and NYC. She also owned several properties in both locations as well as Bergen County, New Jersey. Her heirs, including her husband Edward, fought over her fortune, in a series of precedent setting court cases (regarding verification of the legitimacy of Wills); several of which were covered in and documented in New York Times.

Bear Mountain is a state park about an hour outside of NYC, where you can hike, ride your bike or roller skate, picnic and/or kayak/canoe and peddle boat. During our trip to Nyack, we spent our mornings biking on the bike trail. We avoided biking during the other times of the day to avoid crowds and the heat.

For me, trips to Bear Mountain and the vicinity are best for a day trip or two as there are not that many trails to explore and the surrounding towns are relatively small and easy to explore quickly.

Also important to note is that some of the other bike trails were closed off to county residents only because they are located alongside beaches.

It’s . Almost 20 years ago, I decided that a perm would never touch my crown again. Sometimes I wear my hair straight, sometimes I wear it in twists or braids and sometimes I wear it naturally curly but regardless of how I wear it, it shouldn’t be used by anyone as an excuse to claim that I’m (or my appearance is) unprofessional. That’s why the first Crown Act was passed in California in 2019 and why similar legislation exists in several other cities and states today; to make it clear to those who still didn’t know in 2019 that discrimination on the basis of hairstyle or texture is unacceptable.

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐡?⁣
⁣
Juneteenth for me provides a prime example of the problem with the way history is too often taught in the US.⁣
⁣
In full transparency, although I was born and raised in the US, my formal education (in gifted and talented NYC programs and schools) about some areas of American history was woefully lacking at best. In fact, most of what I learned about Black history both in the US and worldwide (particularly in my formative years (and my ability to critically analyze perspectives (including in history lessons)) was because my parents (who immigrated to the US from Panama as adults) gave me supplemental history lessons (i.e., the other side of the story or in some cases the fully story).⁣
⁣
So it should not be too surprising that I didn’t even know Juneteenth (a celebration of the emancipation from enslavement and triumph in the Civil War) existed until I was living in Florida for Law school and some fellow NBLSA members mentioned it as the potential day for an event. ⁣
⁣
I remember being very confused about what Juneteenth was. Was it all the teen days in June? Was it specific days in June and I missed the number? But then I looked it up (Because even back then Google was Free 😉) and read the stories of the need of Union soldiers to enter into holdout plantations to physically liberate the enslaved (notwithstanding the earlier confederate surrender) such that full emancipation couldn’t be pointed to as an occurrence on a single day but rather it was period of days when emancipation was enforced.⁣. I read about the events across the US that occur across the US to celebrate .⁣
⁣
But what is sad to me is that supplemental lessons shouldn’t be needed to learn history and too often and for too long, a one-sided and often highly biased view has allowed to be told . . . ⁣

As I reflect on the last few weeks, one of the things that has consistently been a source of strength and peace are my circles of sisters. ⁣
⁣
I’m blessed to know some remarkable women who hype me up publicly and behind closed doors, who are gentle with my emotions and help me brainstorm my way to greatness. But in these last few weeks, I have been most grateful for the affirmations that my circles of sisters have given me as we simultaneously fight new (and old) battles to protect, and hopefully meaningful improve, our families’ lives. 🖤✊🏾⁣

Our marriage is one of the most precious things that I have in my life. You challenge me to be best version of the myself, you tell me it is time to rest when you see that I’m getting weary, you protect my mind, body and soul and you accept me for all that I am (even when it is mildly annoying 😂🤣). ⁣
⁣
While we can’t celebrate this milestone the way we normally like to because of COVID, with either a huge bashment filled with food, music and family + friends or a trip to some far off land, the day is just as special because it is a day to celebrate everything you are and have yet to become. ⁣
