Behavioral psych >> Human rituals >> Elements of perception >> Design systems.

What’s the simplest unit we can design that can have the most impact on our audiences?

These are some studies from a mixed use real estate and transit project in which placemaking interventions will engender individual and communal wellbeing.

We loved our on-location Creative Jam with the talented team who are quite literally weaving the two practices of textiles and technology.

Textiles might have been the first binary computational medium. The weft/warp relationship is intrinsically linked to the on/off nature of circuitry.

Some of their work is born out of code and translated to an analog medium. Other pieces modulate between the specificity of digital and the unpredictably beautiful movements of physical elements - like water, air and dye.

Infinite Horizons

Another one from the archives, exploring the idea of global unity by merging together geographically and visually distant horizon lines into one.

Happy Memorial Day weekend, and hoping you get to gaze at your own expansive horizons! 〰️〰️〰️

There are so many ideas that don’t get selected. But they still have value - for use the future in another context, or as learning input to get to the next, better idea.

Here’s a concept for an art installation on some islands in the Middle East seeking to celebrate the shifting sands (literally) of the environment by night, and providing some much needed utility in the form of a shade structure by day.

Actually: we never heard back from the client on this one. Maybe the award email is stuck in their outbox? 🤷‍♂️🤞

On 2024 we’re reminding the world of our firm’s sustainability challenge, and our framework for improvement…

Experience design, placemaking and site specific artwork - especially our niche area of practice seeking to strategical utilize creative technologies, new materials, and hardware - begins with an unsustainable bias. After all, we’re creating things and spaces from nothing, new to the planet, and some of those things use energy, have carbon costs and will likely be on Earth forever…

A few years ago this challenge became an opportunity - and an epiphany: we CAN improve our design and minimize our impact in collaboration with our clients. And, we can do it proactively and transparently.

Our framework and methodology is simple:

Uphold creativity while seeking to improve these three factors in every iteration of our designs:

- Energy Use
- Material Use
- Lifecycle

What is the optimal balance of these factors which allows us to maximize both creativity AND sustainability?

Now thats a worthy design pursuit. 🌍⚡️🪵🧠

Light as Story. In three acts.

Using light - it’s movement, color, scale and form - can be a simple but powerful way to communicate ideas. Somehow, in its low-resolution-ness, light is accessible to all, without all the baggage of legibility, information or detail.

Sculpting light has been the domain of architects and artists for eons but new technologies and new experiential strategies have allowed us to tailor light-driven work to articulate some of our clients’ boldest ideas.

Building out a full brand experience requires a comprehensive strategy and user journey, and designing the biggest of big, to the smallest of details. But starting with light can help ensure we take a big swing…
