The amount of times I have needed to sit people down and tell them this has been, well, increasing in the last few years. But I'll hold your hand while I do it: Everyone is so consumed with their own lives that if they aren't giving you the care, attention, and outreach you need...it's almost always not personal. It's just that everybody's gottalotgoinon.

Okay so I have a life motto and it might sound ridiculous but it has literally never steered me wrong. And for all my fellow Petty Patties out there, I think it will be helpful for you, too.

A little bit of a two-fer on apologies: If you're apologizing, make sure it's about solving the problem/not doing it again vs making yourself feel better.

If you're the one being apologized TO...do you even know what solution you're looking for? And what do you do when the only solution is "go back in time and don't do that stupid thing you did"?

I'm back with more lessons! Like school! Only so much more fun!

Today, I wanna ask: Who is your apology really for? Do you know why you're apologizing? Are you prioritizing your absolution...or a solution (just came up with that, SNAP)

I know there's already a Golden Rule, yeah yeah whatever, I think THIS should be the Golden Rule of marketing, of business, of sales, of literally anything to do with any of those disciplines.

In my experience, the NUMBER ONE PROBLEM that every single client I had was dealing with was that they didn't actually know or understand their audience. The most interesting thing about that is that EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM believed that they DID know and understand their audience, that actually, they were very GOOD at knowing and understanding their audience. They were wrong. You might think you know and understand YOUR audience. You're also probably wrong.

Too many founders, employees, small business owners, contributors, whoever...they are working in their company, in their work, day in and day out. They start to think that The Obvious Thing to Them is Obvious to Everyone and I'm here to tell you that it's not. You are not your audience. Your vision is not your audience's vision. And no one gives a s**t about your amazing idea if you have no idea who is actually supposed to give a s**t about it or whether they actually DO give a s**t about it.

Your audience and what they want, need, don't want, don't like, have questions about...it's more important than literally everything else. The sooner you realize this, the sooner you can reach them and the sooner your business will take off.

Something I've been thinking about a LOT lately (like for the last four years at least) is how it's so easy to think of endings as failures, when like...everything ends. So...how is that...a failure?

I struggled for years with realizing that I didn't want to keep scaling my business. I didn't want to keep growing it. I kept pushing myself and I kept believing I would find the love in it again and that I just needed to hustlegrindgirlbossbabe harder, and then it would all make sense again. And like...it just...didn't. But then I struggled with the question of what does it MEAN if I don't keep doing this? Have I failed? Have I failed, even though I made my own decision to exit when I did, and with no debts owed and plenty of money in the bank? Did I fail because I didn't stick with it?

Maybe to some people I did. But "having the courage to exit early" was something that kept echoing in my head, and so I think it's worth it to rethink those narratives and reframe them - doing the thing you're "supposed to do" even though you're past done with it may not be the perseverance story we keep telling ourselves it is.

I'm turning 40 in four short weeks, and since I'm someone who loves to ruminate on my own mortality and whether I've really done anything meaningful in my life, I thought it'd be a fun exercise to share 40 things I HAVE learned in this time (okay it's partially for sharing and edifying and also partially so I know I totally did something with this time 👀🤣)

Our first lesson is one I've been sharing for years with anyone who will listen, because I think it's SO DAMN IMPORTANT: "No" is the most powerful word you have at your disposal. "No" will open doors. "No" is scary as hell because you THINK you are walking away from opportunities. You're not. Watch the video for more.
