In most cases, homeowners should NOT be replacing HVAC systems that are less than 10 years old. There are exceptions, but they are rare.

In fact, we recently encountered one of those rare situations. A customer had a six-year-old heat pump system that was never properly registered by the original installer and suffered a severe compressor burnout due to installation-related issues. After reviewing all available options, replacing the entire system was ultimately the most economical and reliable solution for that homeowner.

However, situations like this are the exception—not the rule.

To those of you preparing your taxes who had a system installed by us — this is a friendly reminder regarding your tax credit eligibility. 💰

At the time of installation, you were informed if your equipment qualified for the federal tax credit. For 2025, the government is sometimes requiring a 4-digit QMID code in order to process the credit.

✅ Tempstar Equipment Installed?
No QMID is required.

✅ Bosch Heat Pump Installed?
A QMID is required. In most cases, the code is K3M2.

🚨 PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT 🚨

Weather forecasts are calling for 8”–12” of snow and extremely cold temperatures, depending on the news outlet. With heavy snow and dangerous cold expected, it’s important to prepare your home and heating system before conditions worsen.

GENERAL HOMEOWNER PREPARATION
- Keep driveways, sidewalks, and access paths to your home and equipment clear of snow and ice for safety, emergency access, and serviceability.
- Replace your furnace or air handler air filter now if it’s due—restricted airflow can cause your system to struggle in extreme cold.
- Check thermostat batteries if applicable.
- Identify backup heat options in case primary heat is disrupted.
- Open cabinet doors under sinks along exterior walls to allow warm air circulation.
- If freezing pipes are a concern, allow faucets to drip slightly to help prevent freezing.
- If you’ve followed these recommendations and still need assistance, let us know. Even if weather or access makes it difficult to reach you quickly, we’ll still do our best to guide you through troubleshooting so you aren’t left without heat.

NATURAL GAS & PROPANE FURNACES
- Keep exhaust and intake (flue) pipes completely clear of snow and ice. Blocked venting can cause shutdowns and dangerous conditions.
- Do not attempt to cover, reroute, or modify vent piping to “protect” it from snow.
- If your furnace starts short-cycling, shutting down, or behaving abnormally, vent obstruction should be one of the first things checked.

PROPANE-SPECIFIC REMINDER
- Check your propane tank level. If you don’t have enough fuel to get through the storm, schedule an emergency fill immediately.
- Do not rely solely on auto-fill programs—severe weather can delay deliveries.
- Keep the tank, regulator, and surrounding area clear of snow and ice.
- Blocking straight-line wind from hitting the regulator can prevent pressure and flow issues during extremely cold or windy conditions.

OIL FURNACES
- Ensure fuel oil level is sufficient—schedule a refill if needed.
- Replace your air filter if due.
- Check that venting is clear of snow and debris.
- Maintain steady thermostat settings to prevent freezing and maintain reliable heating.
- Keep oil burner and surrounding area clear for proper airflow and safety.
- If your oil tank is outside, make sure the supply line is insulated or otherwise protected from weather to prevent oil slugging and a no-heat situation.

BOILERS (NATURAL GAS OR PROPANE)
- Keep exhaust and intake piping unobstructed.
- Maintain a steady thermostat setting to help prevent frozen or burst pipes.
- Watch for pressure changes, loss of heat, or unusual noises.

HEAT PUMPS
- Every home and system is different—there is no universal rule for when to switch to AUX or Emergency heat.
- At temperatures around 15°F or below, it is not efficient to run the heat pump alone. Even high-efficiency systems (including Bosch) will struggle.
- If your system hasn’t switched automatically, manually set the thermostat to AUXILIARY HEAT.
- For our customers, these temperature parameters are typically preset. If your system was installed elsewhere, they may not be in place.
- If the outdoor unit becomes fully encased in ice or snow, starts making excessive noise, or shakes violently, switch to AUX/EMERGENCY heat.
- Do not chip ice off the unit—this can cause damage.
- Run the system on auxiliary heat for most of the weekend and likely next week. Before returning to normal heat pump operation, allow all ice on the fan blades and surrounding unit to fully thaw; running it too soon can cause the unit to become unbalanced and damaged.

FINAL THOUGHT
A little preparation now can prevent no-heat situations, frozen pipes, and unnecessary emergencies once the storm hits.
