We recently welcomed our partners from to our operations for an inside look at underground coal mining.

Metallurgical coal occupies a unique position in the energy transition. Steel is a critical component of renewable energy infrastructure, including wind turbines, solar farms, transmission towers, and electric vehicles. As a result, much of the infrastructure driving the shift to cleaner energy today is made from steel that is still largely produced using metallurgical coal. While the industry is working to develop lower-emission steelmaking technologies, metallurgical coal remains a key ingredient in producing the steel needed to build the renewable energy systems of the future.

Metallurgical coal is not a single product, but a category of coal used in steelmaking. While many people use the terms metallurgical coal and coking coal interchangeably, the International Energy Agency (IEA) defines metallurgical coal as a broader group that includes coking coal, semi-soft coal, and pulverized coal injection (PCI) coal, each serving a different role in the steel production process.

Coking coal is the most important type, accounting for roughly two-thirds of global metallurgical coal use. It is heated in the absence of oxygen to produce coke, a hard, carbon-rich material that provides both the heat and structural support needed inside blast furnaces.
