An empty tank car is not an empty tank car.

When the product has been moved out, the job isn’t necessarily done.
A tank car that has been unloaded can still contain residual product and v***r. That means the last contained residue can still carry the hazard, still carry the placard, and still carry your name on the paperwork.

That’s where hands-on railcar work matters.

The hardest part of a global emergency response isn’t always the chemistry. It’s getting everyone working together.

That was one of the key themes from Aaron Montgomery’s session at the CHEMTREC International Hazmat Summit: Global Emergency Response for High-Hazard Operations.

Last month Aaron Montgomery and Antonio Madrid spent a week in Arkansas purging a chlorine tank car.
Here are 3 things to bear in mind with a job like this one!

1. Contain the chlorine — residual chlorine must stay within a controlled, closed system and be properly routed to recovery/treatment equipment. Avoiding an uncontrolled chlorine release is critical.
2. Control pressure and connections — valves, hoses, fittings, and pressure conditions need to be correctly managed and verified throughout the purge. Chlorine service demands compatible equipment and leak-tight connections.
3. Verify the purge is complete — you don’t just assume the chlorine is gone. The tank car and system need to be checked according to the site’s procedures to confirm conditions meet the required criteria before maintenance, opening, or other work proceeds.

Aaron Montgomery spoke this morning on Global Emergency Response for High-Hazard Operations — what it actually takes to run a response when the incident is thousands of miles from your head office, and the people on scene are agencies, contractors and regulators who have often never worked together.

😀 We also met Sam. Sam does not hold a CHMM, has never filled out a shipping paper, and got considerably more photo requests than anyone on our team. We've made our peace with it.

Day one of the CHEMTREC® International Hazmat Summit is done, and Nashville has been good to us. 😃

The Welcome Reception filled up with exactly the people this industry runs on — responders, shippers, regulators, and the contractors who get the call when something goes wrong at 3 a.m. The conversations were the good kind: specific, unvarnished, and mostly about what didn't go to plan.

A tank car rolls in on the rail rack. Product transfers through certified equipment into the tank farm. A truck pulls out from the bays — all on the same site, coordinated by the same crew.

Multi-modal isn't a diagram in a pitch deck. It's the difference between a shipment that clears in a shift and one that sits in queue waiting for the next mode to become someone else's problem.
