A compromised drum doesn't announce itself. 🛢️

Jurong Island, Singapore. Our crew worked through a consignment of damaged and leaking drums — each one assessed, then sealed inside a UN-rated overpack before it moved anywhere.

It's slower work than it looks. Full Tyvek and air-purifying respirators in Singapore heat. Two people minimum on every lift. Containment sheeting down before anyone touches the first drum.

And every overpack marked with the original UN number and the word OVERPACK — because a container that hides what's inside it is a worse problem than the leak.

The end state is unglamorous and exactly right: rows of yellow, labelled, documented, legal to move.

This is what a Southeast Asia base is actually for. When a drum fails on Jurong Island, nobody has time to wait on a team flying in from another continent. 🌏

We sat down with CHEMTREC, US Fire Pump and CTEH and asked the question nobody usually asks on a panel: what actually goes wrong?

Three things came out of it.

One — letting it burn is often the most expensive decision available, and it gets made under pressure by people who don't have the data to know that yet.

Two — air monitoring either protects you or convicts you. There's no neutral outcome.

Three — the companies that recover fastest are the ones that talked to their community before the incident, not after it.

Your product is in transit across three states and four handoffs. Legally, whose problem is it?

Yours. At every point. The carrier changes, the site changes, the crew changes — the shipper's name on the manifest doesn't.

That's why we run transfers the same way in every location: same procedures, same documentation, same standard, whether it's a permanent terminal or a field setup nobody has used before.

Consistency isn't a nice-to-have when the liability follows you the whole way. 📋

Sometimes the product can't come to the equipment, so the equipment goes to the product.

Our mobile transfer unit gets set up on site, which means every job starts with a fresh assessment: ground conditions, containment, truck access, and where everything drains if something goes wrong.

A fixed facility solves that problem once. Mobile work solves it every single time. That's the trade, and it's why the setup takes longer than people expect.

Fluorosilicic acid, two alum tanks, and a row of IBCs — all on one site, all needing different handling.

Fluorosilicic acid attacks glass and concrete, and gives off hydrogen fluoride as it decomposes. Alum is comparatively benign right up until it isn't. Putting them on the same job site means the plan has to account for what happens if one ever reaches the other.

Segregation isn't a paperwork exercise. On a site like this it's the whole job.

Antonio has been on the road for OURAY across response and compliance work, most recently at the TRANSCAER Texas event and the ACC Ethylene Oxide Seminar at Texas A&M. Staying current isn't optional in this industry.

White phosphorus ignites on contact with air at room temperature. It's stored and handled under water for exactly that reason.

This is 30 seconds of what careful looks like: controlled conditions, water cover maintained throughout, and a team that has rehearsed what happens if that cover is lost.

Top loading looks simple from the outside. A hatch, a hose, a pump.

What you're not seeing: grounding and bonding verified before anything opens, vapour control accounted for, fall protection rigged for a crew working at height, and a spotter whose only job is to watch the level.

Most transloading incidents aren't caused by the transfer. They're caused by something that got skipped before the transfer started.
