✨ Exciting news! ✨

Iron Shield Creative is now officially on Google!

If you've joined me on a storytelling hike, land-based experience, workshop, or adventure over the years, I'd be incredibly grateful if you'd take a few minutes to leave a Google review.

As a small Blackfeet-owned business, your words truly make a difference. They help future visitors discover our guided experiences on Glacier's East Side and in Blackfeet Country, and they help others understand what makes these adventures so meaningful.

If there was a story, a moment on the trail, a wildlife encounter, or a connection with the land that stayed with you, I'd love for you to share it.

Today I had the privilege of sharing the land with four wonderful women from FL and OH, visiting Glacier and Blackfeet Country. After prayer and offering we walked, sharing stories, listening deeply, and reflecting on the connections our people have with this and visitors glimpse into our way of knowing.

As stories were being shared, we heard the unmistakable grunt of a grizzly from the trees nearby. In that moment, we remained grounded, calm, and respectful. It was a powerful reminder that we were moving through the home of many relatives, and it is important we know our place in this ecosystem. Rather than fear, there was a shared sense of awareness, humility, and respect.

One of my favorite parts of guiding is witnessing visitors begin to see the land through a different lens—not just as beautiful scenery, but as a place rich with stories, relationships, humility, and meaning.

Thank you, ladies, for your openness, thoughtful conversation, and willingness to connect with the land in a good way. It was a beautiful day that I won’t soon forget.

Bear Safety in Glacier National Park

Awareness Is Respect in Bear Country

The mountains are beautiful, but they are also active wildlife habitat.
When you travel through bear country, move with awareness, humility, and respect for the animals who live there.

🐻 When Bears Are Most Active
Bears are especially active:

* Early mornings
* Evenings and dusk
* Nighttime hours

During hot summer days, they may rest in shaded timber or higher elevations and become more active again as temperatures cool.

Be extra alert near:

* Berry patches
* Water sources and creeks
* Thick brush
* Carcasses or strong smells
* Trails with limited visibility

👣 Situational Awareness Matters
Take the earbuds out. Stay present.
Watch for:

* Fresh tracks
* S**t
* Diggings
* Torn logs or overturned rocks
* Ravens circling or strong odors

The goal is to avoid surprising a bear.

🗣️ Use Your Voice
Talk calmly while hiking, especially:

* Around blind corners
* In dense vegetation
* Near loud rivers or windy areas

A human voice gives wildlife a chance to move away before an encounter happens.

🥾 Solo Hiking vs. Groups
Solo hikers should use extra caution in bear country.
Groups are generally safer because they make more noise and appear larger to wildlife.

If hiking alone:

* Stay extra alert
* Avoid hiking at dawn, dusk, or after dark
* Carry bear spray where you can instantly reach it
* Let someone know your route

If hiking in a group:

* Stay close together
* Don’t allow children to run ahead
* Keep conversations going on the trail

🎒 Conceal Food & Scented Items
Food smells travel far in mountain air.

Always properly store:

* Food
* Trash
* Coolers
* Toothpaste
* Snacks
* Pet food
* Scented products

Never leave packs or food unattended.

🧴 Carry Bear Spray — And Know How To Use It
Bear spray only works if you can reach it quickly.
Keep it on your belt or chest strap — not buried in your backpack.

Practice removing the safety clip before heading out.

👀 Understanding Bear Behavior
Not every bear encounter is aggressive.

A bear standing upright is often trying to identify you through scent and sight.

Stress behaviors may include:

* Huffing
* Jaw popping
* Bluff charging
* Swatting the ground

These are warning signs that the bear needs space.

🚶‍♀️ If You Encounter a Bear

* Stay calm
* Do not run
* Speak calmly
* Slowly back away
* Keep your group together
* Give the bear an escape route
* Prepare your bear spray if necessary

🌲 Remember:
The purpose of bear safety is coexistence.

Every responsible action helps protect both people and bears on the landscape.

Enjoy your hike! 🤙🏽 🏔️🥾🪶
