This is a great organization assisting families to help prevent septic system failure while a family member is receiving chemotherapy treatment! Check it out at their link.

For patients with a septic system, this can create an unexpected issue. Septic systems rely on healthy bacteria to break down waste, and chemotherapy medications can disrupt that balance. When this happens, solids may not break down properly, which can lead to faster buildup and, over time, potential damage to your systemβ€”especially the drain field.

During treatment, your body is already going through enough. The last thing you should have to worry about is a costly septic system problem.

That’s where Pumps for Patients comes in. We coordinate septic pumping services for families undergoing chemotherapy to help reduce strain on the system and prevent long-term damage.

If you or someone you know is going through treatment and relies on a septic system, we’re here to help. πŸ’™

Do you know where your septic system components are located? Most septic systems will have a tank where solids settle out and a drain field where the soil does the finishing treatment on the wastewater. Some systems will be holding tanks, which have no drain field and must be pumped by a licensed pumper each time they fill up. Other systems might have a dose tank where a pump will be used to transport wastewater to the drain field. Other components might include filters, distribution boxes or diverter valves. Wisconsin has been issuing permits for the installation of septic systems since 1971. Some county records go back to 1968. County zoning or public health departments maintain the records for these permits and have site plans back to those dates. In Wisconsin, you can check with your local county zoning or public health department to find out more about where your septic system is located.

One great reason to take care of our septic system is to protect our monetary investment. Septic systems can be very costly to replace! But the BEST reason to have properly sited septic systems is to protect health and drinking water supplies. After we use water in our home, we need to recycle it back into the environment. Remember the water cycle from grade school? The water cycle is a continuous system and we don’t make more water. We clean and recycle the water we use each day. When we live on a septic system and we flush the toilet, the waste goes into the septic tank and then into the drain field where the soil cleans it up the rest of the way. We are drinking what we are flushing and this is the BEST reason to make sure our wastewater is taken care of properly!

Do you own a septic system? In municipal areas, property owners pay monthly or quarterly fees to the municipality to cover costs for their wastewater treatment. In rural areas, we have our own β€œmini wastewater treatment plant” known as a β€œseptic system” and we are responsible for the costs of installation, repair and maintenance. We are also responsible for helping to ensure the wastewater we send out to it gets adequately treated before it gets back into the environment. Everything we flush down the toilet or pour down a sink goes into the septic system and these things WILL impact how the system works. Protect your investment and protect your family from health hazards by taking care of your septic system regularly. There are many helpful ideas from the US EPA and more information can be found at https://www.epa.gov/septic

Along with water, air and sunlight, soil is necessary to support life on earth! That alone, is one great reason to LOVE soil! But another reason I❀️SOIL is because of the amazing work it does to clean up our wastewater and recycle it back into the environment. It is the filter that helps to ensure drinking water stays safe and public health is protected. I hope you get to love you some soil today!!! πŸ₯°

If you get your drinking water from private wells, testing your well is important. About one-third of Wisconsin private well owners have ever tested their water. If you take the plunge and test your well water, will you understand the lab report results? No worries β€” help is available!

The DNR is excited to announce the release of Wisconsin’s version of the online tool "Be Well Informed," maintained by the Environmental Council of the States. This web tool allows private well owners to anonymously compare their lab results to state groundwater and drinking water health standards.

Make sense out of the lab report you received with some assistance from Be Well Informed: https://naturalresources.extension.wisc.edu/emerging-contaminants-outreach/understanding-my-laboratory-results/. And kudos to you for getting your private well water tested!
