“Human gestation is 18 months. 9 months on the inside. 9months on the outside. During this 9 months on the outside called exogestation, I like to think of the Mother and Baby still connected through an energetic umbilical cord.

Physiologically Mama and Baby need to remain close for at least the first 9 months of postpartum.

Breastfeeding, baby wearing, bed sharing this all physiologically necessary for a baby to truly flourish.

It is very similar to Kangaroos, where the baby is born but stays in the Mother’s pouch until around 8 months. Human gestation has evolved to be born at 9-10 months due to the size of the human head but a baby’s brain is really only 25% developed when born compared to other mammals who are fully functioning and able to walk and get themselves around. Human babies need their Mothers to get around, to be fed, to be protected and cared for.

So Mamas keep your babes close.
Hold them.
Love them.
Sing to them.
Eye gaze with them.
Breastfeed them.
Share a bed with them.

Schools are legally responsible for considering the least restrictive environment FIRST when providing special education services for students with needs. This can and should go beyond instruction. Think about lunch, arrival, dismissal and recess. Those portions of the day should always should be discussed when it comes LRE.

It is National Breast/Chest Feeding Month! Bloom is grateful to continue the work of supporting infant feeding goals and supporting families along the beautiful and often challenging journey. We have been blessed to work with amazing families as they take it one day at a time to achieve their breast/chest feeding goals. We are grateful for you all entrusting us to walk alongside you. Bloom is also working with our 3rd Bloom Lactation Cohort as they are studying and committing to become Certified Breastfeeding Specialists to better serve families. In addition, we are continuing to support our past cohorts as they embark on becoming International Board Certified Lactation Consultants.

With all the amazing things happening this month, and the level of intentionality to support families, Bloom is also honoring Black August. Black August is a time of reflection and commitment to the ongoing work towards liberation. We are keenly aware that this work requires restoration, reclamation, joy and bliss. We are of course continuing our commitments, but moving away from this idea that we must always be productive and active on social media and “seen” to prove one is committed to this work. We know what we must do and listening and learning on how to do better. So, we are sharpening our hearts and minds to continue to be dedicated to this work. As Toni Cade Bambara reminds us, “All speed isn’t movement.” We celebrate with our partners, community and collaborators as we all continue to honor this time and ensure that we take time to go inward, to reflect so that we can maintain our collective work towards liberation and reproductive justice.

Today Guided Beginnings-MD is excited to present the James Stephon Debnam Memorial Scholarship in celebration of what would have been Stephon’s 26th birthday! We are currently accepting applications based on the following criteria:

◾️Current high school senior
◾️Accepted at a 4 year university or college
◾️Pursuing a degree in special education
◾️3.5 Minimum GPA
◾️Resident of New York, North Carolina or the DMV area

Applications are due by June 1st, 2022. The selected recipient will be announced by July 1st, 2022 and will receive $1,500 payable to their university or college.

We are joining to celebrate Black Maternal Health Week for its fifth anniversary! BMHW22 kicked off on Monday and will end on Sunday. The week is dedicated to educating and advocating for Black Mamas. Through a series of digital events and community engagement, BMHW uplifts Black women-led organizations to focus on the root causes of poor maternal health outcomes, while engaging Black voices to lead immediate conversations around community-driven policies and programs. Your reaction (even though negative) may cause baby to bit again in order to get the same reaction.

▪️Remain calm
▪️Firmly say, "No bite!"
▪️Unlatch baby
▪️Take a break from nursing

Keep log as to how frequent the biting occurs. If the biting does not decrease or stop completely, consider reaching out to a lactation professional to problem solve the reason for the biting.

Today is Cerebral Palsy (CP) Awareness Day! We want to take a moment to recognize the late James Stephon Debnam who was born with CP and transitioned earlier this month. He is one of the many reasons that was created. Our mission is to help foster a positive and healthy start for families and young children by providing early childhood/special education consultation and lactation consultation services. We love you Stephon! 🖤
