🎒 Baggage vs Luggage 🧳

I was listening to a podcast the other day and first heard the interviewee talk about the concept of “Baggage vs. Luggage”. It's interesting to me because there is an immediate positive / negative association on both words:

🎒Baggage = something that's weighing you down or follows you wherever you go, that you can't seem to shake
🧳Luggage = something you keep close to you, packed with fun items for a trip.

"She's got a lot of baggage" vs. "She's got a lot of luggage" are almost 2 completely different meanings in the American way of speaking.

What if we started thinking about all of our past mistakes and errors as “luggage” instead of “baggage”? What if we were able to wear those lessons learned confidently like a badge of honor instead of hiding them and scared of being "found out" or "a failure"?

This is what I want to teach people. It's ok to be vulnerable. Teach others about your missteps with the intent on showcasing what you've taken from those experiences. No one is perfect so why are we all trying so hard to be? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Grab your "luggage" and get in that next interview. Need help navigating? Send me a note or schedule a call with me. I'll help you craft the perfect message for the hiring team when they interview with you.

🚫 Avoid Common Resume Mistakes! 🚫

One of the biggest pitfalls? Using generic language that doesn’t show your impact. Here’s how to make sure your resume packs a punch 🥊:

➡️ Ditch “Responsible For”: Instead of saying you were “responsible for managing projects,” try “Led cross-functional teams to complete projects ahead of schedule.” Action words make a stronger impression and demonstrate ownership.
➡️ Use Power Verbs: Words like “improved,” “designed,” “initiated” and “streamlined” add energy and specificity to your achievements. Let hiring managers see you as a proactive contributor!
➡️ Get Specific: Don’t just list tasks. Highlight results, such as “Implemented a new system that reduced processing time by 20%.” This adds value to your experience!

A few changes can make your resume more dynamic and memorable. Let your strengths stand out! 💼

💼 Don’t Overlook Soft Skills on Your Resume! 💼

Soft skills — think leadership, adaptability and teamwork — are just as essential as technical skills in today’s workplace. Here’s how to make them shine on your resume:

➡️ Use Concrete Examples: Show, don’t tell. Instead of “I’m adaptable,” try “Led my team through a major company transition, maintaining productivity and morale.”
➡️ Highlight Team Successes: Showcase your collaborative wins, like “Worked cross-functionally to reduce project time by 15%.” This demonstrates both teamwork and results!
➡️ Tailor to the Role: Identify which soft skills are key to the job and integrate examples that highlight those skills. Show that you’re the right fit both technically and personally.

Soft skills are foundational to continued growth for any professional.

📊 Quantify Your Success on Your Resume! 📊

Numbers speak louder than words when it comes to showcasing your impact. 🗣️ Here’s how quantifying achievements can set you apart:

➡️ Show Your Impact: While saying you “improved sales” is good; saying you “increased sales by 30% within 2 months” is powerful. Numbers make your accomplishments concrete and memorable.
➡️ Make Your Value Clear: Quantified results help hiring managers immediately understand your contributions. Think in terms of percentages, dollar amounts, or time saved — they all paint a clearer picture.
➡️ Stand Out from the Crowd: Measurable achievements add credibility and highlight your unique strengths in a way that standard responsibilities can’t.

Let your results do the talking! 📈

🔑 Keywords Matter! Here’s Why: 🔑

When it comes to your resume, one size doesn’t fit all. Tailoring your resume to each job can make a huge difference and keywords are your key! Here’s how to make it work for you:

➡️ Mirror Keywords: Scan the job description for essential skills, experience and qualifications. Make sure your resume reflects those keywords naturally.
➡️ Be ATS-Friendly: Many companies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to filter resumes. By using the right keywords, you increase your chances of getting past these filters.
➡️ Show Alignment: Highlighting the keywords that match the job shows recruiters you understand their needs and are a strong fit for the role.

Simple adjustments make a big impact. Tailor your resume to speak the language of each job you apply to — it’s a game-changer!

💡 Resume Basics: Make It Clear, Concise & Impactful! 💡

Your resume should showcase your value in a way that's easy to understand and leaves a lasting impression. Here’s a quick breakdown on how to keep it effective and memorable:

➡️ Clear: Use simple, straightforward language and clean formatting. The goal is to ensure that hiring managers instantly “get” what you bring to the table.
➡️ Concise: Stick to the essentials — limit each role to 3-5 bullet points focused on the most important achievements. Less is more!
➡️ Impactful: Don’t just list duties. Highlight accomplishments and quantify results wherever you can. Ex: “Increased revenue by 30% within six months.” Numbers tell a compelling story. 📊

A well-structured resume is more than just a document; it’s your brand’s first impression. Make sure it reflects your best self in every line!
