National Litter Study
Top Ten Cities with the Most Roadside Litter
9: Phoenix
Located in the middle of a dessert with an often high wind speed, litter can really get around in Phoenix. Holding down the eighth spot, Phoenix residents report that 9.8% of residential neighborhoods have visible litter on the roadside, which can contribute to decreasing property values and growing legal issues.

Based on a 2020 National Litter Study, the US produces about 24 billion pieces of roadside litter every year, and another 24 billion pieces can be found along waterways. You can see it everywhere you go, along every road or riverside in the country. Large metropolitan areas tend to have the most roadside litter per capita, but highways definitely represent the most roadside litter per mile. Litter is an epidemic, decreasing the value of regions and encouraging more litter as people think their little bottle or cigarette will simply be joining millions of "friends".

Homelessness is a Crisis in Phoenix

In 2010
Based on reports from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Maricopa Association of Governments, there were over 13,000 homeless people in Arizona in 2010. Sometimes more in a single night.

Key Data Points for Phoenix & Maricopa County (2023-2024)
Total Homelessness (County): In Maricopa County, the total count fell slightly from 9,642 in 2023 to 9,435 in 2024, according to the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG).
Unsheltered vs. Sheltered: In Phoenix specifically, the drop in the unsheltered population (down 19%) was largely due to an increase in people in temporary shelters (up 15%).

TOHAJIILEE, N.M. โ€” Earlier today, an officer-involved shooting occurred in the community of Tohajiilee, N.M., involving two officers from the Navajo Nation Police Department.

According to reports, officers responded to a call near the Navajo Housing Authority at approximately 11:50 a.m. after reports of individuals shooting in the area.

As a precaution, a shelter-in-place was issued for the Tohajiilee community while law enforcement responded to the situation.

Two Navajo Nation police officers were transported to Albuquerque for medical treatment and are currently reported to be in stable condition.

I am grateful to hear that both officers are receiving care and are in stable condition. Our Navajo Nation police officers put themselves in harms way every day to protect our communities, and todayโ€™s incident is a reminder of the risks they face while serving our people.

I ask the Navajo Nation to keep these officers and their families in your thoughts and prayers as they recover. Our prayers are with them, their fellow officers, and the entire law enforcement community during this difficult time.

I also want to express appreciation to the partnering agencies who responded quickly to assist, including the New Mexico State Police, Laguna Police Department, Bernalillo County Sheriffโ€™s Office, Bureau of Indian Affairs, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

At this time, there are no reports of additional injuries and no ongoing threat to the community. The Navajo Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation Albuquerque Field Office, and the Navajo Nation Department of Criminal Investigation are conducting a joint investigation. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and share updates as more information becomes available.

Please continue to keep our officers and the Tohajiilee community in your prayers.

โ€” Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren

January is National Human Trafficking Prevention Month
Let's:
โ€ข Equip stakeholders with practical tools and
resources to raise awareness and mobilize their
networks to address human trafficking in their
communities.
Human Trafficking Prevention
Month 2026:
Stronger Connections.
Stronger Futures.
The theme for Human Trafficking Prevention Month
2026 reminds us that our everyday connections play a
vital role in preventing human trafficking.
Research shows that strong relationships at home, in
our communities, and in our workplaces are protective
factors against human trafficking and other forms of
abuse. Traffickers may target individuals who feel alone
or unsupported. When people are connected to caring
families, neighbors, and professionals, they are more
likely to have someone who notices when something
does not seem right and offers help.
By investing in everyday actionsโ€”checking in,
listening, creating welcoming spaces, building trust,
and offering supportโ€”we strengthen resilience and
help create a future free from human trafficking.
