“Montani Semper Liberi” — Mountaineers Are Always Free!

Those words aren't just a motto; they're a part of West Virginia's identity. Featured on our Great Seal, they reflect the spirit of independence that helped define our state's founding in 1863.

West Virginia has a remarkable story; forged in the midst of the American Civil War.

What does "Mountaineers Are Always Free" mean to you?

📬 Nothing says spooky season quite like a postcard from one of West Virginia’s most haunted landmarks. 👻

Our newest postcard features the historic Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in Weston, West Virginia—one of the Mountain State’s most fascinating and famously haunted landmarks.

There’s something special about holding a piece of the past in front of the very building that inspired it.

👻 Just in time for spooky season, this new design is now available from Falling Rock Postcard Co.

📬 We’ve been busy behind the scenes!

While things may have been a little quiet around here lately, there’s a lot happening behind the scenes at Falling Rock Postcard Co. We’ve been spending our days getting our little shop ready and, most importantly, stocking the shelves with unique, locally made, and one-of-a-kind treasures we can’t wait for you to discover.

From postcards and vintage finds to handmade goods, stationery, and pieces created by talented makers from right here in West Virginia, we’re working hard to create a shop that feels like a little collection of the places and people we love.

There’s still plenty to do, but we’re getting closer every day! 🏡📮

We can’t wait to share more about our new location and announce our opening date. Until then, stay tuned for more sneak peeks and a look at what we’ve been putting together!

📮 Happy World Postcard Day from Falling Rock Postcard Co.! 🌎

Today we’re celebrating something small that has a remarkable way of connecting people across miles and generations: the postcard!

October 1, 1869, marks the anniversary of the first postcard which changed the way people communicated and connected. Long before texts, emails, and social media, postcards carried greetings, stories, photographs, and memories from one place to another.

So celebrate the old-fashioned way! ❤️

📬 Send a postcard! Take a moment to put pen to paper and send a little piece of somewhere special to someone special.

📍 Pick one up at a local shop, museum, or historic site.

We’ve been a little quiet around here lately… but for good reason! 👀

Behind the scenes, we’ve been spending a lot of time working on our Falling Rock Postcard Co. shop. Things are starting to come together! There’s still plenty to do, but it’s been so exciting to watch this little shop take shape piece by piece.

Here are just a few small sneak peeks of what we’ve been working on. We’re keeping a few things under wraps for now, but we can’t wait to eventually open the doors and welcome you in!

Thank you for your continued encouragement, support, and patience as we build something we’ve dreamed about for a long time. We’re getting closer! 🏔️📮

✈️📮 The Day Postcards Took Flight: America’s First Official Airmail Flight

On September 23, 1911, history took to the skies at the International Aviation Tournament in Garden City, New York. Among the spectators gathered to watch the daring aviators, few realized they were about to witness the beginning of a new chapter in American postal history.

The stage was set as Postmaster General Frank H. Hitchcock swore in the newest member of the Post Office Department: a young aviator who would serve as America’s “First Aeroplane Mail Carrier.” To make the occasion even more memorable, Hitchcock established a tent on the tournament grounds where spectators could write postcards addressed to anywhere in the country and send them on the first official airmail flight. For the first time, ordinary people could become part of a remarkable moment in history simply by putting pen to postcard.

That inaugural flight was only the beginning. Over the next seven days, numerous airmail trips were made as part of the aviation event, carrying a total of 43,247 letters through the skies. What began as an aviation spectacle helped demonstrate the possibilities of transporting mail by air and paved the way for the future of airmail service in the United States.

At Falling Rock Postcard Co., we love remembering the moments when postcards were more than paper—they were part of history.

What story would you have sent soaring through the skies in 1911?
