Before tomorrow's ride, three quiet minutes.

• Turn on crash detection — Garmin Incident Detection, Strava Beacon or LiveTrack. Someone should know where you are.
• Set up your phone's Medical ID and emergency contacts. First responders can see them without unlocking your phone.
• Look up one line on your auto policy: uninsured / underinsured motorist coverage. It protects you on the bike, too.

None of this is about expecting the worst. It's about being ready, so you can ride freely.

"How can you do upholstery and bike law?" I get asked that a lot. The honest answer: they're more alike than you'd think. 🛋️🚲

This 1950s sofa is nine feet long. (Yes, nine feet!) More than 20 years ago, someone left it abandoned on a sidewalk in Midtown Kansas City. I brought it home, reupholstered it, and it lived in my house for 20 years.

Now it's headed to a new home, dressed in a beautiful Kravet fabric. If all goes well, you may see it in a national or international magazine.

Bike law works the same way. After a crash, you may feel abandoned, broken, and unsure what comes next. That's where we come in. We help put the pieces back together, with the same patience and attention to detail that brought this sofa back to life.

Another good day at KC Bike Law.

Not every cyclist we represent was hit by a car. Some never had contact with a vehicle at all.

A pothole that swallowed a front wheel. An unmarked construction drop-off. Loose gravel left behind after a resurfacing job. A sunken utility cover. A trail washout nobody flagged.

The crash looks different. The injuries don't.

You still go over the bars. You still land on pavement. You still deal with the road rash, the concussion, the destroyed frame, and the months of not riding.

Here's what riders often don't realize: when a hazard caused your crash, there may still be someone responsible. A contractor. A property owner. A municipality - though those claims carry short notice deadlines that can expire in a matter of days.

Evidence disappears fast on these. The hazard gets repaired. The gravel gets swept. Your Garmin file and your photos may be the only record that it was ever there.

If you went down on a road or trail and have been told you don't have a case because no driver was involved - that's worth a second opinion.

A day on the bike. Great people. Kansas City barbecue. It doesn't get much better.

Breaking news from the KC Bike Law front desk: our official mascot, Greta, is officially off the market.

Meet Max — the golden-haired, feather-eared charmer who rode all the way in from Brookside to sweep her off her paws. And sweep he did.

Turns out Max is quite the catch. He's got a job (two, actually) and impeccable taste in squeaky toys. He spends his days "supervising" at his owner's shops — jorjy, the home store, and Lauren Alexandra, the baby boutique. A working man with two addresses on W 63rd Street? Greta never stood a chance.
