On her way to the remembrance ceremony, Barbara Massey Mapps stopped by the pocket park named after her late sister, Kat Massey, to thank volunteers participating in the 5/14 Day of Service & Remembrance.��Kat Massey was an advocate, especially for the Fruit Belt neighborhood where she lived, and long time employee of Blue Cross Blue Shield. She was 72 when she was murdered during the racist massacre at Tops Markets on Jefferson Ave on May 14, 2022.

We believe that May 14th is a day of grief, memory, and reflection. It asks us to pause. To say their names. To hold their families, the survivors, and the East Side community with care.

The 5/14 Day of Service & Remembrance does not seek to sum up their lives, the pain of this day, or the depth of what was taken.

It is one way — among many — to honor memory through action, care, and community presence. To not look away, nor to ignore the structural realities that led to the painful injustice of 5/14/22.

This day of service and remembrance is rooted in Sankofa, an Adinkra symbol and principle from Ghana. With this choice, our intention is to look back to honor those we lost while moving forward with intention.

As we observe this day, we also recognize that remembrance cannot end with a moment. The conditions that shaped life on Buffalo’s East Side before May 14, 2022 did not disappear after it and must be addressed with care, intention, and sustained commitment. This includes, but is in no way limited to, food access, transportation access, housing stability, neighborhood investment, economic opportunity, and care across generations.

Our work today and beyond is organized around four pillars:

1. Local Economic Empowerment
2. Physical Environment & Place
3. Food Justice & Access
4. Elders to Youth

This framework is fluid, shaped by directly expressed needs, and held together by advocacy, accountability, and community care.

We’re deeply grateful to everyone who signed up to show up for Buffalo through action, care, and community.

Last night, we had the joy of celebrating our Managing Director, Kimberley LaVare, PMP, at the Girl Scouts of Western New York Women of Distinction awards.

We’re incredibly proud to see Kim recognized for the leadership, excellence, and care she brings to her work and community. It was a beautiful evening honoring women who are making a real impact across Western New York.
