UPDATE ON ODORANT SITUATION AS OF 8:30 A.M. on Sunday.

National Fuel has additional crews in the Southtowns neighborhoods (Hamburg, Orchard Park, Evans, Derby) impacted by yesterday’s odorant issues to complete all gas service turn-ons. Field service representatives are knocking on doors, as we do need home access to safety relight the gas service. Customers without gas service, as a result of yesterday’s issue, can also contact National Fuel at 1.800.444.3130 and a representative will be sent out as soon as possible. We appreciate the inconvenience this has caused and thank our customers for their continued patience.

Overnight and continuing this morning, National Fuel crews have been investigating odor of gas calls from customers throughout Hamburg, NY. Within the last hour it was discovered that odorant pumps from a nearby natural gas facility were pumping elevated levels of the required mercaptan (the rotten eggs smell added to odorless natural gas for easy detection) into the gas system and it has been adjusted. Odorant levels are beginning to stabilize.

For the continued safety of all customers, National Fuel does request that anyone smelling the rotten eggs odor in or around their home should contact the utility to report it by calling 1-800-444-3130. A field service representative will be dispatched to monitor the situation.

National Fuel appreciates the assistance and apologizes for any inconvenience.

On March 21, 2022 at 3:29 PM, the Town of Hamburg Police Department was dispatched with the Big Tree Fire Company and multiple mutual aid fire companies to a reported structure fire located at 19 N. Eaglecrest Dr in the Eaglecrest Mobile Home Park. First-arriving patrolmen discovered a fully involved single-wide trailer. The fire was extinguished and the scene was turned over to the Town of Hamburg Police Department Fire Investigation Unit.

After the investigation, it was determined that this fire was intentionally set. David B. Allen, 78 years old, was subsequently arrested and charged in connection with the fire. Allen was arraigned this morning in Town of Hamburg Court before the Honorable Judge Morgan for charges including Arson 3rd, Reckless Endangerment 1st, multiple counts of Criminal Mischief and Endangering the Welfare of a physically disabled or incompetent person. Allen was subsequently released on his own recognizance in accordance with New York State Bail Reform law.

The Town of Hamburg Police Department Fire Investigation Unit was assisted by the Big Tree VFC, the Village of Hamburg Police Fire Investigation Unit, the Erie County Sheriff's Office Fire Investigation Unit and the City of Buffalo Fire Marshalls Office. The Big Tree Fire Company was assisted by the Woodlawn Fire Company, Newton Abbott Fire Company, Inc., Hamburg Volunteer Fire Department, Scranton Volunteer Fire Company, Armor Volunteer Fire Company, Lake Shore Volunteer Fire, Lake View Fire District, Orchard Park Fire Company, Evans Center Volunteer Fire Company, and AMR Western New York.

Coincidentally, this arrest falls during the 2022 Arson Awareness Week which is observed during May 1st to May 7th. Each year for Arson Awareness Week, the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) gathers and shares information to raise awareness of arson or youth fire setting to provide the fire service and community residents with strategies to combat these problems in their community.

A DOT blocker unit parked on the shoulder of Route 219 was destroyed after it was struck by an inattentive driver today. Following a number of workers struck in work zones, several highway departments have chosen to park trucks and trailers before work areas, to shield highway employees from oncoming traffic. This trailer did exactly what it was supposed to do, absorbing the hit without creating more danger. If you look closely, even the mud flaps behind the tires on the dump truck say "slow down, move over, it's the law!"

The accident, which took place in the southbound lanes between the I-90 and Milestrip Road, thankfully did not injure any highway workers. It's unclear if the driver of the striking vehicle received injuries or was charged.
