Sometimes God changes the format without changing the purpose.

We waited for hours. Schedules were colliding, the clock kept moving, and people started saying, “He probably isn’t coming.”

But Patterson Communications Group stayed on the phone with the road team, kept working every angle and refused to give up.

And then T.I.P. pulled up. 👑

By the time he arrived, we had approximately 15 minutes. And if I have to choose between a 15-minute interview with T.I. inside a booth or giving my people 15 minutes to meet him, speak with him and share the vision of the 5/14 Living Memorial & Healing Center, I’m choosing my people every single time.

He greeted 5/14 Memorial Foundation members and their families, listened to what is being built here in Buffalo and left us with words that carried real weight:

“The men and women from this community should be building this memorial. Invite me back when it’s built.”
We heard you, King. 👑

Because this is about more than constructing a building. This is about Buffalo investing in Buffalo—our people, businesses, contractors, workers and leaders putting their time, talent, influence and resources back into the city we call home.

A special thank-you to Cheryl Patterson Patterson Communications Group. Nobody sees everything that happens behind the scenes because Cheryl works through the moving pieces and makes it look easy. Your hard work made this moment possible.
Thank you to my girl Sheila Brown, who was in Atlanta handling business at WIGO and still orchestrated everything from miles away. She opened the legendary WUFO to us on an unscheduled Saturday and arranged for two incredibly hospitable DJs to welcome and support us. That is ownership. That is leadership. That is love for Buffalo. 🤎

BCC, I love our team 🧡

Thank you to the 5/14 Memorial Foundation, Council Woman Zeneta Everhart 🤎 for keeping us laughing and supplying Mentos and violet mints 😂💜, and the MWBE Constructors, Inc. team for being onsite and ready.

To my 🔥 COHORT, I love y’all! Stay Tuned!! 👀😘

I didn’t grow my business because I had an MWBE certification.

I grew because I learned how to “use it”

There is a huge difference.

Certification helped open the door, but I still had to learn how to find the right opportunities, position my company, build relationships with primes and agencies, understand procurement, and stop wasting time on opportunities that were never a fit.

That shift changed everything.

If you’re thinking about getting certified, or you already are and you’re wondering why the contracts aren’t coming, this is exactly the conversation we need to have.

I’m hosting a FREE virtual MWBE Certification Information Session to break down what certification is, what it means for your business, and how to actually put it to work.

Because the goal is not to just get certified.

The goal is to get certified, get positioned, and get the contract.

They kept asking me:

“Talia… what are YOU getting out of this?”

And I understood why.

In a world where people expect a percentage, ownership, a title, or a check, it can be hard to believe someone simply wants to see a place win.

For me, this was about community reinvestment.

East Buffalo raised me. I live here, work here, build here, and I believe if you have access, relationships, knowledge, time, talent, or treasure, you should pour some of it back into the places that poured into you.

Through The RARE Place, Inc., that looked like media, youth programming, partnerships, community activation, grant support, and helping bring people back through the doors.

No ownership.
No hidden agenda.
Just impact.

Sometimes the ROI isn’t money.

Sometimes the return is seeing kids laughing, a Black-owned business gaining visibility, residents who are business owners learning, improvements happening, and a community asset becoming stronger.

What are you reinvesting into the community that helped make you?

TURN THE VOLUME UP TO HEAR ME LOUDLY📣

Some people measure their worth by comparison.

The car. The house. The clothes. The designer label. Being seen with the “right” people. Having something newer, bigger or more expensive than the next person. But barely give back.
And that is their journey.

Some people have very little to give back because they are the community currently in need, and that is okay too.

Then there are those of us who are simply comfortable in our own skin, and somehow that makes people uncomfortable.

They see us—but they do not **SEE** us.

They see the clothes, the hair, the curves, the colors and the confidence. They see someone who refuses to disappear in a room. What they may not see are the years of work, the families fed, the people employed, the programs supported, the doors opened and the communities served.

I do not need a car, a label, a title or another person’s approval to define me.

I do need the freedom to be fully present wherever I go; without code-switching, competing, shrinking or wondering who may be threatened by the fact that I know who I am.

Happily, I do not check boxes 💪🏽

I X them out.

I let my work speak for itself. God gets the glory and the final say. I will continue walking this walk with clean hands and a pure heart, because that is the only way I know how to move.

And apparently, He made me pretty damn amazing.

I was born outstanding.

Everything else is extra sauce😜🍝🔥

Women in construction do not get dressed for the job site by accident. 👷🏾‍♀️

The jeans protect my legs.
The high socks protect my ankles and keep debris out.

The loafers are for moving between meetings🤭 but the proper safety footwear is always ready when it is time to step onto an active site.

The tank top keeps me comfortable, and the long-sleeved zip-up jacket gives me the coverage I need when conditions change.

Construction is about being prepared, protected and ready to move.

And yes, I am working on the weekend.

By day, I serve as Director of Projects and Property Management at ECIDA. Before work, after work and on the weekends, I am building MWBE Constructors, Inc.

Some people call it “no days off.”

I call it purpose.

Because when you love the work, understand the impact and know you are helping businesses become ready for real opportunities, you do not resent the work.

You show up for it and you look good doing it. ✅🦺✨

Western New York business owners—this is your call to get in the room.

“Bold Moves Only II: Built 2 Scale” is happening August 1st at The Exchange at Beverly Gray, and when a trailblazer and financial empowerment leader like

John Hope Bryant comes to Buffalo, we show up!

Because the right room can create a shift.

A shift in your energy.
A shift in your mindset.
A shift in the way you think about money, ownership and opportunity.

And ultimately, a shift in the way your business moves.

I know firsthand what can happen when information, preparation and opportunity align.

I’ll be in the room to learn, receive and grow; but I’ll also be taking the sharing about “access versus readiness” and the role M/WBE and SDVOB certification can play in leveling the playing field when your business is truly prepared to activate the opportunity.

Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Rochester and the surrounding Western New York region—don’t hear about the shift after it happens.

Be in the room!
