Today we celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day! He has become the iconic figure behind the Civil Rights Movement and a reminder that we must judge people not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. Character is a word we don't hear much about these days, as though it is a negative concept. The Oxford Dictionary defines Character as the "mental and moral qualities distinctive of an individual." MLK was first and foremost a Baptist Preacher, who believed and preached recognition of a higher power and the value of patterning ourselves after his teachings. There will be people today who use MLK's platform to spread their hate. Hate for how we got here or the fact that the human condition is not perfect. Reject their diatribes. Instead consider what MLK has asked us to question in ourselves in order to make a better world.
